Notes
Individual:
REFN1544

From information received since preparing this page I have discovered
that Recca's maiden name may have been Addington and not Shelley. If
prov en all records will be changed.
*****
Rebecca Chamberlain (Shelley) was among the earliest of Billerica's
inhabitants. She died in prison at Cambridge, in carcerated for the crime
of witchcraft.
Rebecca was the 8th great grandmothe r to Paul Plante.

I t may be that the Daniel Shedd genealogy of 1921 (which I haven't seen)
super sedes some of this
information, but wanted to share the following interesting link to the
Salem witch trials!
This is from a "History of Billerica, Massac husetts" by the Rev. Henry A.
Hazen, published Boston,
1883.
Daniel Shedd's son John, born 2 March 1655, married Sarah Chamberlain on
9 Jan 1676 or 77. Sarah
died 1735-6, Jan 17, John died 1736-7, Jan 31. Their children were:
Sar ah, b 3 Nov 1678, m. Nathan Crosby;
Elizabeth, b 7 Jan 1681-2, m. Ebenezer Far ley;
Benoni, b 11 June 1684, d 26 June
Rebecca, b 21 May 1685, m. Joshua Abbo t;
John, b. 6 July 1687
Mary, b. 7 Dec 1689, m. Abraham Chamberlain (widowed, and then married
either John Wilson or
Joseph Gil(l)son)
Dorothy, b. 14 Ja n 1691-2, m. Samuel Danforth;
Hannah, b. 23 March 1693-4, m. cousin Nathan She d
Benjamin, b. 5 Aug 1696;
Jemimah, b. 18 Jan, 1698, m. John Wilson
Sarah Ch amberlain, mother of the above brood, was the daughter of William
Chamberlain and Rebecca
Addington), among the earliest of Billerica's inhabitants. Rebecc a
Chamberlain died in prison at
Cambridge, incarcerated for the crime of wit chcraft." So those of you
descended from Rebecca Addington
Chamberlain and S arah Chamberlain Shed have some interesting history to
think about...
I am t rying to link Rebecca "the witch"'s granddaughter Mary Shed (born
1689 or 169 7 in Billerica) with
Joseph Gilson (b 1694 in Groton), who is my husband's
6 xGgrandfather...does anyone have a Joseph
Gilson, Gillson, Jillson in their re cords?
Thanks!

Rebecca Chamberlain was not convicted of the crime; but only imprisoned,
and died in prison. She was
apparently under suspicion of w itchcraft, but I haven't found documents
charging her with specific
crimes. I've been wondering why she would have been accused, as I know
that her husba nd William was
a respected person of responsible position in the community.
A ccording to "Witchcraft, Magic and Religion in 17th century
Massachusetts", b y Richard Weisman,
"The Salem [era] witches were [often] persons who commanded respect both
from their family and from
members of their community" which i s what made their supposed misdeeds
(often in the form of speaking against th e church) all the more powerful"
