Individual:
Sometimes Gallivan or Galvan.
"Dennis Galvin came to this country with his family from Ireland. Like many immigrants, the first job was with the railroad. While in New York he met and married Johanna Casey, also from Ireland. After living in St. Louis for a time they homesteaded at Assumption, Minnesota. They had nine children, but lost three to diphtheria.
In 1885 they purchased 200 acres of land from Darwin Litchfield. The interest rate was then 6%. They moved to Montrose with their children Tim, Tom, Kate, Pat and Mike. John and Julie remained in Assumption, but John later moved to a farm near Buffalo. (From Montrose, Minnesota 1881-1981)
1860 Poor Book Lists Denis Galvin and Johanna Casey living in Belle Plaine, Scott County, Minnesota.
1860 Census lists them in Washington Lake, Sibley County, Minnesota.
1865 Dennis was drafted to service in the war, but the war was over before he saw any action.
In the 1870 census, the family was listed as "Gallivan" in Washington Lake, Sibley County.
They left Sibley County for better farm land in Wright County and homesteaded in Montrose, Minnesota.
1880 Census lists them living in Marysville, Wright County, Minnesota as farmers.
This farm, which was actually in Montrose, was owned after them by their son, Patrick, and then by Patrick's daughter and son-in-law: Helen and Clarence Kespohl.
1900 Dennis and Joanna retired to Waverly.
Joanna died of cancer in 1912 and Dennis died in 1914. They were buried at the Assumption Cemetery near Sibley County, Minnesota
