Elizabeth McCarthy was born at Keokuk, Iowa on November 22, 1864. At the age of ten years she came to Minnesota. On November 29, 1882, she was united in marriage to Mr. Thomas Galvin and they lived on a farm in Marysville. They purchased the 80-acre Patrick Bannon farm for $2,000.00. In 1893 when a section of railroad land grant was divided for sale, they bought an additional twenty acres. With the additional acres it was more convenient to have the farm buildings located on the western end of the farm so they were moved.
In 1902 they moved the original Dennis Galvin house to the farm . By this time they had seven children: Mary, Catherine, Thomas, Margaret, Alice, Raymond, and Leonard. Two more children would be born to them here: Francis and George.
The Minnesota legislature passed law making education compulsory for children beginning in 1895. Galvin's school age children attended classes in the Montrose Public School until 1904. That year St. Mary's began as a parish school, having rented out rooms to the Public School District since 1893.
From 1904 until St. Mary's Grade and High School closed in 1969, there woul be only two brief periods that a Galvin was not enrolled.
When Thomas died, Elizabeth sold the farm to her son, Leonard. He kept the farm until shortly before his death in 1989. It had been in the family for 106 years.
