General: PA Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. 24--Warrantees of land, County of Philadelphia, 1733-1866: ABENTSHIN, CHRISTIAN 50 Acres, 29 Oct 1751. One year later Berks Co. was formed and this property, which was located in that section known for many years as Longswamp, came to fall within what was to become Longswamp Twp, Berks Co., PA. In 1754 Christian Abensken was listed on the tax lists of Berks Co. He appears on the List of Taxables of Longswamp Twp., Berks Co., PA in 1759. No mention of Christian is found in Berks Co after 1759.
He turns up next in 1762 in NC purchasing a tract of 180 acres of land situated on a ridge between Coldwater and Dutch Buffalo Creeks in Cabarrus Co., NC. Soon after settling in Cabarrus, he joined with some of his neighbors and established the German Reform Church on Coldwater Creek. A list of early members contains the names of Christian Avenshine, wife Catherina, and son, Reinhold. The Coldwater German Lutheran-Reformed Church is now the New Gilead United Church of Christ, Cabarrus Co., NC. Cabarrus County, originally part of Mecklenburg County, became a separate entity in 1792. The first resident pastor of the Coldwater Church was the Rev Samuel Suther (father of David Suther who a Catherine Abenshine).
Christian Avenshine granted land to Rhinehold Avenshine in Cabarrus County, NC, in 1793. Christian Ovenshine and son Rinholt are listed in the 1790 census for Salisbury District, Mecklenburg Co., NC, pp. 161, 162. His will was dated 9 Apr 1793. testator Index, 1665-1900, North Carolina Wills, Vol. I, lists for Cabarrus County: Christian Avendshine, 1794, Will Book A, p. 112.
Christian's will lists: wife, Catherine; children, Rinehold & Catherine Propst; grandchild, Henry Propst; and children Darity Culp & Madlena Slough.
