Individual:
Cyrus was a prosperous man who owned and operated a large blacksmith
establishment near Coshocton, Ohio. The neneteenth century ruralblacksmith might employ up to a dozen men. They were craftsmen who madehand tools like hammers, drills, saws, axes and chisels. They also madebuilders hardware such as nails, knobs, hinges, pulls, bars for doors andfurniture hardware. Of course, since all local transportation of bothpeople and goods in that day was provided by horses, a blacksmith'sprincipal output consisted of horseshoes, harness replacement partshardware and wagon and carriage replacement parts hardware such aswheels. Some blacksmiths even provided veterinarian services by treatinghorse wounds and diseases. In 1865, throughout rural America, thisbusiness was at its zenith. By the end of the century, except forhorseshoes, production line manufacturing would replace blacksmithing.
Cyrus was intelligent and a good teacher. He also was a follower of Alexander Campbell.

Cyrus's older brother Alpheus Cooper (16 Sep 1818-20 Jul 1896) is my
gg grandfather. Both Cyrus & Alpheus were first cousins to author James
Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851). Their grandfather was James Cooper
(1729-1795). I understand that Alpheus was a teacher as well. Meshach was
a blacksmith and a farmer. They were likely in Lancaster Co., PA in 1830 &
shortly thereafter moved to Ohio. Meshach's brother Marmaduke apparently
joined him & Meshach's sons Alpheus, Cyrus, & Levi (1817?-1877) in the
move or right after. Levi moved to Fulton Co. IL a few yrs after his
father died. Levi named one of his sons (born around 1851) Alpheus
Fenimore Cooper. W. Wright's Cooper Family Genealogy includes Meshach &
children (see http://external.oneonta.edu/cooper/biographic/
genealogy/wrightgenealogy.html).
