Text:
See explanation of dates in Lee F. Reese's "Ashby Book" page 10i. Much has been written about the contacts between Capt. John Ashby and George Washington and can be found in Douglas Southall Freeman's "George Washington Vol. 1 & Vol. 2" published in 1948 and John C Fitzpatrick's "The Writings of George Washington 1745-1799", published 1931. This includes Washington's stay at John Ashby's home near Ashby's Gap in March 1748. Capt. John Ashby served under George Washington during the French & Indian War but was too old to serve in the Revolutionary War. John Ashby's Will was originally lost but located in later years, published and certified in Frederick County. The Will was written in October 1788 and Proved May 13, 1789. In it bequests are made to Elizabeth Ashby Peters, Ann (Nancy) Ashby Smith, Lewis Ashby, Jane Ashby Darnell, and Edward Ashby. Crozier notes another son John who is not mentioned here. In a Codicil John Ashby gives to Nancy Miller a negro girl named Frank and to her mother Susannah Miller a mare. These two people are not further identified. Was called 'Rufus' for his red hair.
