A Certificate of Disability for Discharge for Stephen Jones states he was
69 when he was discharged on June 16, 1863 and he was in the hospital
almost the entire time he was in the military. When he enlisted in the
22nd Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Company E, he was described
as 5' 8", dark complected, dark hair, and dark eyes. It also said he was
born in Harlan County.
Mary Henderson, and Oscar Erwin all signed a General Affidavit to
support the pension claim of Stephen Jones. They stated that they had
lived close to and known Stephen for 30 years. They lived in Estill Flats
in Carter County. Henderson was 51 and Oscar was 48.
Pension records received on 9/3/98 indicate a pension was paid to Wilburn
Jones who was listed as a helpless child and who died on December 22, 1914
A Stephen Jones Jr. owned land in the part of Johnson County that was
once Lawrence County.
In the matter of Francis Mead Jones application for the Pension of her
husband, Stephen Jones, an affidavit was written by Robert Erwin, 66, who
states he has known and lived near Stephen Jones for 35 - 40 years. He
stated that Stephen's wife Nancy had died and that the husband of
Francis, John Mead, had also died and that Stephen and Francis had
married.

"Know all men by these presents that I, Stephen S. Jones of the County of
Harlan and the State of Kentucky for diverse causes and considerations to
me here unto moving have made, ordained, authorized, constituted and
appointed and by these presents do make Richard Wilburn of Surry County
and the State of North Carolina, my true and lawful Attorney, irrevocable
for me and in my name and to my use to ask, demand, sue for, and recover,
and receive of the estate of Jane Wilburn, deceased, of Surry County and
the State aforesaid all of my part of the aforesaid estate as a legatee
or lawful husband of Susanah Wilburn, also by virtue of the above
authority do authorise and impower the aforesaid Richard Wilburn to
receive all and singular, my part as heir of the estate of John Wilburn,
deceased of Granville County and State afore said."
