John was born in England about 1595-99. He lived in Sudbury, Suffolk atsome time, because his wife and children were said to be from Sudburywhen the came to New England in 1635. His wife's name was Alice, but herfamily name is not known. John probably came to New England before therest of his family, because he was not listed as travelling with them onthe ship in 1635. The family settled in Lancaster, Mass. John Smith,Senior, died in Lancaster, Mass., July 16, 1669, at the home of JohnMoore, who married his daughter, Anne. The will of John Smith ofLancaster, dated April 12, 1665, mentions son John, daughter Ann, sonRichard, daughter Alice, and he appointed "my beloved son-in-law JohnMose" (Moore) sole executor. Cutter claims that John died in Sudbury onJuly 12, 1639, but that John was probably another John Smith. Bond saysthat John Smith Jr. was admitted freeman in Watertown on May 22, 1639,and may have been the John who died in Lancaster in July, 1669. This JohnSmith was probably not a junior and probably was not a landowner inSudbury, and he seems to have always lived in Lancaster.2 _PREF Y
