MARRIED JANE SHAW KING ABT.1835 WHO WAS FROM SANDWICH,MASS.HER LINE ON THE BARLOW LINE, THEN THE PERRY LINE TRACES BACK TO THE MAYFLOWER.
HE WAS BORN IN RICHMOND R.I. HE SEEMED TO SETTLE IN NEWPORT IN 1828. (SO. KINGSTON LAND EVID.,22;111 ) HE CAME FROM THE SOUTH COUNTRY (Richmond) ACROSS NARRAGANSETT BAY WHERE THE FAMILY HAD RESIDED FOR OVER 100 YEARS.JONATHAN LEFT WESTERLY FOR NEWPORT WHERE HE MET HIS WIFE JANE.THEY WERE SOON MARRIED.
I TRACED HIM ARRIVING IN NEWPORT IN 1828-1830.HE WAS 5 FEET 9 IN.TALL AND HAD A DARK COMPLECTION WITH BROWN EYES.HE IS ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE A REDDISH BEARD AND REALLY LIKED TO EAT RAISINS
HE WAS A SHIPS CARPENTOR AND CAME TO NEWPORT TO BUILD SHIPS ON THE BAY AT THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF ELM ST .AND WASHINGTON ST.WHERE" THE STORER" PROPERTY NOW IS AND WHERE THEY BUILT THE SHIP " EVE" WHICH WAS LAUNCHED ON SEPT.10,1831.LATER THEY MOVED THE SHIPYARD TO THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF WASHINGTON ST. AND BRIGGS WHARF.
HE ARRIVED FROM WESTERLY R.I. IN 1828 .HE ARRIVED WITH WILLIAM HAZZARD CRANDALL ,BORN WESTERLY R.I.FEB.21,1798.THE OLDEST SON OF JOEL AND RUTH CRANDALL AND NELSON MERRITT.ALL OF THIER DESCENDENTS WERE STILL LIVING IN NEWPORT IN MARCH 1929.
HE ORGANIZED THE FIRST DEMOCRAT PARTY CALLED THE JONATHAN JAMES DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY.HE SUPPORTED GROVER CLEVELAND FOR PRESIDENT.THE MEMBERS INCLUDED HIMSELF AND 2 OR 3 OF HIS SONS.
HE ORGANIZED PARADES FOR THE DEMOCRAT PARTY AND WHEN THE REPUBLICANS PARADED,HE WOULD GO INTO HIS HOUSE AND NOT COME OUT FOR DAYS.HE WAS VERY PARTISAN.
HE HAD AN ARGUEMENT WITH HIS BROTHER AND LEFT HIM ONLY 10.00 WHEN HE DIED.
WHEN HE WAS ONLY 21 THE GREAT ROBBERY OCCURED AND SOME PRISONERS EXCAPED AND BEAT HIM UP SO HE WOULD TAKE THEM VIA WATER TO NARAGASSETT ISLAND.WHILE THEY WERE AT SEA; A POLICE BOAT OVERTOOK THEM AND RECAPTURED THE PRISONERS.
HE BOUGHT THE HOUSE AT 88 BRIDGE ST.IN 1850 FROM ISAAC DAYTON ALONG WITH 2 OTHER LOTS AND LIVED THERE UNTIL HE DIED.His son Thomas Franklin James,our ancestor, lived next door.If your standing in front of #88;Its the house to the left.My cousin Cathy James Phillips and her family live there now (1998)

AT PRESENT THE HOUSE IS OWNED BY MY COUSIN CURTIS JAMES,WHO IS NOW 77(1995)along with this house #88 is the house my Great,Great Grandfather,Thomas F.James , lived in.My cousin Cathie Lawton James Philipps lives there now.
he is burried in the commen cementery on Farewell St. .ALSO BURRIED THERE IS HIS SON JONATHAN JAMES WHO DIED AT ONE AND A HALF YEARS OLD.BORN 1-4-1841----DIED 9-16-1842.HE DIED THE SAME DAY MY SON LANCE SCOTT JAMES WAS BORN (9-16-1960.
ALSO BURRIED IN THE GRAVE IS HIS SON EDWARD WHO WAS 8 WHEN HE DIED BORN 7-14-1843---DIED 10-2-1851. ALSO IN THE SAME PLOT ARE HIS WIFE, JANE( SHAW KING) JAMES,JONATHAN ANTHONY JAMES,HIS GRANDSON (MY GRANDFATHER )AND ANNE( WALSH) JAMES,MY GRANDMOTHER.MY FATHERS BROTHER JOHN THOMAS JAMES AND HIS WIFE DOLLYDADS OLDER BROTHER GORDON JAMES AND WIFE LILLIAN( FONTAINE) JAMES.
JONATHAN JAMES LIVED AT 88 BRIDGE AVE NEWPORT,R.I.HE DIED AT 82 YEARS 5 MONTHS 7 DAYS OLD.DIED OF PHEUMONIA.

JONATHAN FIRST CAME TO NEWPORT IN 1828 WITH WILLIAM HAZZARD CRANDALL OLDEST SON OF JOEL AND RUTH ( PECKHAM ) CRANDALL OF WESTERLY,R.I.THEY DECIDED TO COME TO NEWPORT TO SET UP A SHIP YARD,TAKING SEVERAL MEN WITH THEM FROM WESTERLY,INCLUNING OUR JONATHAN AND NELSON MERRITT,WHOSE DESCENDENTS ARE STILL LIVING IN NEWPORT.
THE FIRST SHIP YARD WAS AT THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF WASHINGTON AND ELM STREETS IN NEWPORT.IT IS WHERE THE OLD "STORER "PROPERTY NOW IS AND WHERE THEY BUILT THE SHIP "EVE ",LAUNCHING IT ON SEPT.10,1831.IN LATER YEARS THE SHIPYARD WAS MOVED TO THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF WASHINGTON STREET AT BRIGGS WHARF.
ACCORDING TO A SAILING CERTIFICATE OF AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP,WHICH HAD TO BE PRESENTED BEFORE ANYONE COULD SIGN UP ON A SAILING VESSEL,ROUSE P.GARDNER OF SOUTH KINGSTON,R.I. ON DEC.13,1830,SWORE THAT JONATHAN JAMES JR.,THE BEARER OF CERTIFICATE # 80 WAS A MARINER AND WAS BORN IN RICHMOND R.I. ABOUT FEB.7,1809.HE WAS 21 YEARS OLD AT THAT TIME AND HIS DESCRIPTION WAS GIVEN AS BEING 5 FT.9 1/2 INCH.TALL AND HAD A DARK COMPLECTION WITH HAZEL OR BROWN EYES AND BROWN HAIR.
JONATHAN WAS VERY ACTIVE IN POLITICS AND WAS THE PRESIDENT OF THE JONATHAN JAMES ASSOCIATION IN THE "POINT"SECTION OF NEWPORT,WHICH FLOURISHED IN THE FIRST CAMPAIGN OF GROVER CLEVELAND,WHEN HE WAS A DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT.THE ASSOCIATION WAS COMPRISED OF JONATHAN JAMES JR. AND HIS SONS ARNOLD,FRANKLIN,THOMAS AND GEORGE.
HE DIED AT 82 YRS 5 MOS 7 DAYS AND IS BURRIED WITH HIS WIFE IN THE JAMES PLOT, IN THE OLD COMMON BURYING GROUND,NEWPORT,R.I.
HE NEVER REMARRIED AFTER HIS WIFE DIED.
