Individual:
THIS MAN IS MY GREAT GRANDFATHER.HE WAS BORN IN NEWPORT IN 1845 AND LIVED TILL HE WAS ALMOST 88.HE MARRIED ANNE M. or C.
CANNON ,WHO WAS BORN EITHER IN SCOTLAND OR GEORGIA,USA.HE DIED IN 1933 AND ANNE DIED AT 47 IN 1892.
I KNOW VERY LITTLE OF HIM AS HE DIED 4 YEARS BEFORE I WAS BORN.
HE WAS A POLICEMAN IN NEWPORT.AT THE AGE OF 52 HE DIDNT HAVE A DIME TO HIS NAME BUT HE MANAGED TO AQUIRE A SMALL FORTUNE.WHEN HE DIED HE LEFT 85,000.00 AND OWNED 12 HOUSES,ONE OF WHICH HE LIVED IN ,RIGHT NEXT TO 88 BRIDGE ST.HE WAS EITHER A VERY GOOD INVESTOR OR HE KNEW HOW TO MAKE A BUCK,EVEN IF IT WASN'T LEGAL.
AFTER HIS WIFES DEATH HE HAD A HOUSEKEEPER CALLED AUNT KATE MURPHY.KATE WAS HIS SECOND WIFES SISTER.SHE WAS MARY O NEILL.
IN LATER LIFE HE WAS A CRIPPLE kicked by a horse, BUT HE COULD GET AROUND.MY FATHER TOLD ME HIS MOTHER,ANNIE WALSH JAMES, USE TO YELL AT HIS FATHER BECAUSE HIS FATHER THOMAS WAS A DIRTY OLD MAN.HE USE TO GO TO LONG WHARF WITH HIS CRONIES AND STARE AT THE YOUNG GIRLS IN THIER BATHING SUITS.
HE WAS KICKED BY A HORSE AND LOST THE USE OF HIS LEGS.HE MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE A GUY.I HAVE A PICTURE OF HIM AT 70 AND HE LOOKS LIKE A REAL DAPPER.HE WORE A WALRUS MUSTACHE AND DRESSED QUITE WELL.
MY FATHER WAS HIS ALMOST FAVORITE GRANDSON,GORDON WAS HIS FAVORITE, AND HE LEFT HIM 500.00 IN HIS WILL,WHICH AT THAT TIME WAS A LOT OF MONEY.
.
I have a picture of him and my uncle,as a child,Gordon James.I hope it survives.
LIVED AT 35 MARSH ST.NEWPORT WHEN MY GRANDFATHER WAS BORN.HE MUST HAVE MOVED TO 86 BRIDGE ST. LATER ON.He also lived at 22 Marsh St.
D8-388
In his will he left the houses to his 3 sons,my grandfather,Jonathan Anthony,James A. and Thomas F. The house were #'s33 & 33 1/2 Washington St.--20-22-22 1/2-29-29 1/2 Marsh St.
James was the executor of the will.Thomas later sold his shares to Jonathan and James. The 2 brothers either bought more houses or they were also part of the estate of Thomas Franklin. My cousin Curtiss remembers he and his father doing alot of work on them before he sold them.
Thomas Franklin married after the death of Annie to Mary O'Neil.Mary's sister Kate O'Neil Murphy had to go live with them to care first for Thomas Franklin and then her sister. After his death he left the 2 houses to Kate Murphy. She didnt want to live in either, so she sold 86 & 88 Bridge St,Newport to Thoman F.He used the money from the sale of the other houses to his 2 brothers for the purchase price.88 Bridge St. was purchased in 1850 by Jonathan James and Jane Shaw King and it became their residence. He may have been the one that purchased ALL of the houses that Thomas Franklin willed to his 3 sons.Thomas Franklin Sr. lived at 86 Bridge St.My cousin Curtiss lives and owns the house at 88 and his daughter ownd 86 Bridge St.
