Notes
Individual:
MY GRANDFATHER WAS BORN AND DIED IN NEWPORT,R.I. MARRIED MISS ANNE WALSH WHO ALSO LIVED IN NEWPORT,R.I.
HE LIVED MOST OF HIS LIFE AT 33 WASHINGTON STREET BUT MOVED AROUND THE CORNER TO 29 MARSH ST DURING THE LAST 15 YEARS OF HIS LIFE.
HE WAS EDUCATED AS A PRESSMAN AND WORKED ON A NEWSPAPER.LATER IN HIS LIFE HE BECAME A PAINTER BY TRADE.
HE WAS LEFT 12 HOUSES ON MARSH ST.BY HIS FATHER THOMAS BUT BY HIS DEATH ALMOST ALL HAD TO BE TORN DOWN AS HE WOULD NEVER COLLECT THE RENT AND THEY FELL INTO DISREPAIR.
WHEN HIS WIFE DIED IN 1930 ,HE SUFFERED A MENTAL BREAKDOWN AS THEY HAD A GOOD LIFE TOGEATHER.HIS DAUGHTER GWEN ,THEN 16,HAD TO TAKE CARE OF THE FAMILY.HE HAD 4 CHILDREN...GORDEN,JOHN,NORMAN,AND GWEN MAE.
HE HAD 7 BROTHERS...JIM THE ACTOR,WHO WAS MARRIED TO IDA.THEY HAD A DAUGHTER DORATHIA WHO WAS A SOMEWHAT FAMOUS ACTRESS.SHE HAD HER PICTURE ON THE COVER OF THE MIRROR MAGIZINE.THEY LIVED IN NEW YORK.HE HAD 6 OTHER BROTHERS TOM AND AL .BOTH WERE CARPENTERS.TOM WAS FRIGHTENED TO DEATH WHEN A BOLT OF LIGHTNING SORED UP MARSH ST.FOLLOWED BY THE BAY RUSHING UP SO CLOSE TO THE STREET THAT IT RIPPED UP THE MANHOLE COVERS, THROWING THEM INTO THE AIR.IT WAS PROBABLY A HEART ATTACK.MY FATHER TOLD ME THAT AL WAS A DRUNKEN CARPENTOR.
JONATHAN FINALLY DIED A BEATEN OLD MAN IN 1954. I CAN REMEMBER SEEING HIM TWICE,ONCE AS A SMALL CHILD AND THE OTHER TIME AFTER HE DIED.HE WAS BURRIED FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN NEWPORT AND WAS BURRIED IN THE COMMENS CEMENTERY.AS I REMEMBER HIM,HE WAS A HARD,GRUFF OLD MAN WITH VERY LITTLE FEELING FOR ANYONE.BUT DONT FORGET HE WAS SICK WHEN I SAW HIM AND HE WAS A FIGHTER TILL THE END.I ALONG WITH MY COUSINS CARRIED HIS COFFIN AT THE FUNERAL.
MY COUSINS JOHN AND MORRIS SAID HE USE TO BEAT THEM AWAY WITH HIS CANE WHEN THEY TRIED TO GET TO CLOSE TO HIM.IN HIS LAST YEARS HE LIVED IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE AT MARSH ST,IT WAS A SMALL ONE ROOM SHACK NUMBERED 29 1/2 MARSH STREET.
WHEN I WAS ABOUT 10,MY FATHER INTRODUCED ME TO HIM AS HIS GRANDSON.HE GRUNTED HELLO AND THAT WAS THAT.NOTHING ELSE WAS SAID.
MY COUSINS TOLD ME THAT BEFORE HE MOVED INTO THE SHACK;THAT HE USED TO LIVE IN A TRAILER ALONGSIDE HIS SON THOMAS' HOUSE.THE KIDS SAID HE WAS A MEAN OLD MAN.
I have pictures of him and Anne, but who knows if they will survive. He was good looking and she was a real doll, very petite, like her daughter Gwen.
I have a real lot of pictures, starting with Thomas James up thru all my fathers family.Sure hope someone takes care of them when I pop off.
