Text: JOHN THOMAS MERCHANT
John T. Merchant was born April 1, 1814 in Jefferson County, Virginia, the son of Isaac and Eleanor Thomas Merchant. The Merchant family moved to Ohio in 183¶ and settled in Seneca County. The family had eleven children and John T. was the eldest. His father was in the War of 1812 and his grandfathers, Isaac Merchant and Leonard Thomas, were soldiers in the Revolution, the latter serving entirely through it, attending the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. John T.'s father died in 1851, and hid mother in 1870, aged eighty-four years.
Mr. Merchant began work at a paper mill when he was eight years old and remained there until age twenty, when he went to Cincinnati, walking across the mountains and then by boat. When he could not find employment at his trade, he became a deck hand on the boat "North America" and made five trips to New Albany, Indiana. In 1835 he first visited Marion County and in the following year he returned to work for wages ($100 to $120 a month.] in Salt Township for two years. Having saved $90, he married and began renting farms, one and one half years in Salt Township and two years in Marion Township. In 184´ he purchased eighty acres in the eastern part of Marion Township and lived there seven years. Then he bought sixty-two acres in the corporation of Marion, and continued to live upon it until 1860, when he sold it and bought a 300 acre farm most of which he improved. In 1860 he built a frame house for $1300, and in 1861, a barn for $400.
On September 28, 1852, he was married to Rebecca A. Gruber who was born in Virginia, a daughter of Christian and Elizabeth Mourer Gruber. She died in March, 1875. On November 20, 1875 Mr. Merchant married Salome Ulsh, a daughter of Jacob Ulsh. She was born in Marion Township March 22, 1845.
Mr. Merchant was a Republican, a Royal Arch Mason and a Trustee of Marion Township. He was the first gate-keeper of the Marion Cemetary. He died January 28, 1894.
The foregoing information is taken from two histories of Marion County, one published in 1882 by Leggitt, Conaway & Co. and the other in 1907.
