3/5/96There seems to be some confusion as to whether this Lorrel Nichols' name was named Lorrel Brayton or Brayton Lorrel. Ref. FG12 has it Lorrel Brayton, while refs. FG12 and RH2 have it as Brayton Lorrel. For the moment, I will stick with Ref. 12 since I am quite sure that the author of this ref. got it directly from the subject's sister, Sarah Elisabeth Nichols (my grandmother). I also figure that probably he was named for his grandfather Lorrel Nichols, b. 1794, which could mean that the name Lorrel would go first. However, I do know from personal knowledge that he used the name Brayton, nicknamed Bert (my mother knew him as her"Uncle Bert"). It could be that, since he used his middle name as his given name, he reversed the names in his adult life. Certainly, his tombstone gives his name as Brayton Lorrel, Ref. VC30. However, Clara Sackett, my grandmother's 1st cousin in Ref. 185 refers to him as as "Lorrel Brayton Nichols, named for his grandfather." The name Brayton sounds like a surname, customarily used as a middle name. Also, his son Lorrel Nichols, b.1900, was named Lorrel Brayton Nichols.
