Barry Payne Smothers passed away on February 26th, 1935 in Abilene, Taylor co., Tx.  He was buried on February 27, 1935 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Abilene, Tx.  Information provided by David Smothers.

Note here:  I have also seen his occupation listed as Store Owner.

In my files, I have noticed a  reference to a "first wife"...M.C. Chauncey???  Per the Smothers genealogy site, that information was given out many years ago from a relative.   As of this date (3-10-2008), NO ONE has yet found any information on this "M.C. Chauncey", or any link to that name.  I also find nothing in my research.  Following the example of others in the Smothers line, I also choose not to include it in my files.  I do however, intend to keep this reference in my notes...

This information provided by notes given by MRS. Barry Payne Smothers...be aware that there is no way for me to confirm much of this additional data.  I note it here for other genealogists who may find this interesting and useful in some way.

Berry Payne Smothers came to Texas in 1885 and settled in Comanche County. He moved to Taylor County in 1900 and established a general mercantile store at Potosi.  He was appointed Postmaster January 11, 1909.

AGED ABILENE RESIDENT DIES...(1935)

Berry Payne Smothers passed away on February 26, 1935 in Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas.  He was buried on February 27,1 935 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Abilene, TX.  Information provided by David Smothers.

  B.P.  Smothers, 83-year-old Abilene resident and former merchant died last night at 9:15 o'clock at his home, 503 South Seventh Street.  Death resulted from a stroke of paralysis, which occurred last Friday.
  The funeral service will be held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Laughter Funeral Home, with Rev. Dick Bright, Baptist minister of Potosi, officiating.  Burial will be made here in the Odd Fellows Cemetery (Odd Fellows Cemetery, Abilene, Texas.)
  Four of Mr. Smothers' seven surviving children were at the bedside with his wife when the end came.  They were O.L. Smothers of Los Angeles, Calif.; Sam Smothers of Phoenix, Ariz.; J.A. Smothers of Walters, Okla.; and Mrs. W.W. Holly of Peoria, Ariz.
  Other children are A.B. Smothers of Phoenix, Claude Smothers of Farmersville, Calif., and Mrs. Sam Holt of Tulare, Calif.
  Mr. Smothers was born in Tennessee and came to Texas in 1885, settling in Comanche county.  He moved to Taylor county in 1900 and established a general mercantile store at Potosi.  Twelve years ago he moved to Abilene, opening a grocery store at South Third and Pecan streets.  He retired from business two years ago when his health became impaired.  He was a member of the Baptist church.
