Individual:
George Lumpkin was a farmer. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
In a book CASS COUNTY AND HER PEOPLE, is the following. (There
are errors in biography, but also much acturate information. I am
entering it in total but in ( ) will point out things that have been
proven in error. JPT).
GEORGE AND MARY LUMPKIN No. 591: "Sometime after August, 1860,
GEORGE AND MARY WITCHER LUMPKIN arrived in Cass County, Tx from
Chambers, Co.,Ala. It was on Aug. 28, 1860, that they were dismissed
from the Baptist Church of Christ at Pleasant Grove, Ala. The
document attesting to their removal is still in existence and states,
"This is to certify that our beloved Bro. George Lumpkin and Sister
Mary Lumpkin are in full fellowship with us and are dismissed from us
when joining another church of same faith and order". (It was assumed
that George and Mary came to Tx. 1860 because of this letter of
dismissal. I have begun to think that they came with John R. Lumpkin
1852 because of two things: I have found marriage record of dau. Susan
Helen in Rusk County, Tx. 28 Dec. 1858. Also in CSA Pension papers of
son Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Lumpkin he state that he entered state
of Tx. in early 1850s. It is likely that GEORGE and MARY came to
Texas with son JOHN R. LUMPKIN in 1852. The Church dismissal may
have been really dated 1850 or the Lumpkins wrote for it later. I
don't know. It would help if we could find George and Mary on a 1860
Census, but I haven't found it anywhere. If daughter Susan married
1858 in Rusk County then maybe they were there. Another question
unanswered is why did John R. Lumpkin and wife Eveline go to Milam
County, her father to Falls County and George to another county. I
think the families kept in touch with each other and had warm feeling
for each other because of name sakes in families. We know that
Eveline Cornett Lumpkins Cornett Lumpkin's brother Rueben visited her
in Limestone County because he died in her home suddenly and is buried
in Mart on Lumpkin lot. Susan Lumpkin Pearce named children Eveline,
John Patton, Joe Hiram. I would guess that economics and making a
living determined where they settled in Texas and that they kept in
touch with each other. We have letter from dau. in Calif. to Texas
and she mentions letter from Rome, Ga. 1880. This dau. Martha married
1858 in Rome, Ga. so it is evident that she did not come to Tx. 1852
or she returned to marry. She and her husband Hugh Hinshaw left
immediately after the marriage in a wagon train to California. They
settled above San Francisco in Sonoma area and began a very prosperous
truck farm.
" GEORGE LUMPKIN was born July 1880, in Granville Co., NC, the
son of WILLIAM and POLLY WINSTEAD LUMPKIN. He descended from JACOB
LUMPKIN who had imigrated to New Kent, Va. in 1682."
NOTE: I do not believe that GEORGE LUMPKIN was born in Granville, NC
or that he was son of William and Polly Lumpkin. It is more likely
that he was the son of RICHARD LUMPKIN and ELIZABETH SMITH marr. in
Guilford County NC 1790. GEORGE was born in 1800 in NC. In 1820
Census Madison County Ga. is ELIZABETH LUMPKIN with a lot of
children. We have GEORGE'S marr. record 1821 Madison County, Ga. to
Abagail Cleghorn so we feel this is GEORGE'S mother. This Elizabeth
lived near JOHN CLEGHORN in 1820. In 1827 this ELIZABETH LUMPKIN
draws in Ga. Lottery and states that her husband is out of state at
time. A 1800 and 1810 Census of Guilford County NC makes this a
possibility. Possibly siblings of GEORGE are ELIJAH (Baptist minister
Ga.); THOMAS in Rome, Ga.; DICKERSON; ROBERT D. in AL in Civil War
period; possibly PITTMAN of Floyd County. I feel sure there were
other siblings. I think RICHARD LUMPKIN came from King's and Queen's
County Va. and served in American Revol- ution from that county. I do
think they descended from JACOB LUMPKIN. JPT
"GEORGE LUMPKIN married for the first time, ABIGAIL CLEGHORN and
they were the parents of these children:
ELIJAH R. married HELEN KYLE in 1844, HIRAM married JULIA CORNUTT
in 1845, JOHN R. (1827-1902) married EVELINE CORNUTT, and BETSEY who
married BENJAMIN PIERCE. Most of these were born, married and
remained in Floyd Co., Ga. JOHN R. removed with his family to
Limestone County, Tx. about 1854." (John first settled in Milam
County, Tx. Later moved to Limestone Co., Tx. He is buried in Mart
Cemetery, right on border of Limestone and McLennan Co., Tx.)
Before 1832 GEORGE LUMPKIN married for the second time MARY
WITCHER, who was born in Tn about 1805. After 1850 the family
excepting a dau. MARTHA LUMPKIN HENSHAW, moved to Chamber Co., Al.,
with these of their children, SUSAN HELEN, ROBERT DONALD and BENJAMIN
F. They settled at Pleasant Grove near the Tallapoosa River.
" SUSAN HELEN LUMPKIN (1839-1923) on Dec. 23, 1858, in Ala.
married JAMES ANDREW PIERCE." (I have a copy of this marriage from
Rusk County, Tx.JPT) " Their children were: ALBERT LARANZO
(1860-1943); ROBERT; JAMES A.,JR (1865-1880); MARY E. (1867-1895)
married W. E. BLACKMON; MARGARET (Maggie) (1870-1963); FANNIE E.
ALLISON (1872-1958); JOHN PATTON (1874-1953) married MATTIE F.
CHAPPELEAR; JOSEPH H. (1876-1958) married BERTHA PAULETT; GEORGE HENRY
(1879-1881); and BABE (1883-1959).
ROBERT DONALD LUMPKIN (1843-1919), a physician, served in Co. C,
14th Tx. Reg. of Ector's Brigade during the Civil War. He married in
Cass Co., Tx. MARTHA ANN COOK the dau. of WESLEY COOK and MARY BROOKS
COOK. Their children were CLARENCE, LIZZIE, JAMES, ROBERT, WILLIAM
SAWYER (1872-1944); ADDRIAN; LOUISA (1881-1957) and HENRY. Only
LOUISA married. She and her husband MELVIN WALKER and family lived at
Lanier.
DR. LUMPKIN married secondly to CLEMENTINE CAMPBELL. They had no
children.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LUMPKIN (1846-1929) served in Madison's Reg. of
Lane's Brigade of Texas Cavalry during the Civil War. He married
three dau. of HENRY LAW and SARAH FITZPATRIC."
