Edward came from Chichester, England, aboard the "Anne" in 1623, and settled at Pymouth, later moving to Eastham. In the year of his arrival,he held four acres of land for a garden plot on the other side of the EelRiver. In 1627, there was a division of cows and goats and Edward was inthe12th group which consisted of the Jenneys, Robert Hicks, his wife andchildren (Margaret, Samuel, Ephraim, Lydia and Phebe), and Stephen Deane;he drew the big line-back cow brought over on the Anne. In that same yearof 1627, there was a division of land which had not previously beendivided, and 20 acres were allotted to each person. Edward was one of thesurveyors appointed to lay out the lots, the others being WilliamBradford, Edward Winslow, John Howland, Francis Cook and Joshua Pratt. Hewas one of the Purchasers and was on the 1632/33 Freeman List, and taxed12s. With Myles Standish and others, Edward Bangs was chosen in 1633 todivide the meadow in the Bay equally. He was also on committees to assessthe entire Colony for public costs, and he also served on various juriesand other public service committees. He appears to have been a man whowas responsible and trusted. In Oct 1636, he sat on a jury to try"actions and abuses". In the following year, he was one of the GreatInquest, or Grand Jury, sworn to enquire of all abuses within the body ofthe Government. The next year, he was appointed with the Governor andAssistants, and Stephen Hopkins, as a committee to divide the meadowgrounds. In 1639, he was appointed by the Court as an arbitrator betweensamuel Gordon and Thomas Clark and he was sometimes overseer of the guardagainst the Indians. Edward moved to Nauset with the Prence group, and in1647, he was supervisor of highways there. In 1652, he became a Deputyfor Eastham, and in 1657, was licensed to sell wine and strong waters inEastham "...provided that it bee for the refreshment of the English andnot to bee sold to the Indians..." In a deed of 22 Jun 1651, he wasjoined as a Grantor by his wife Rebecca. He made his will on 19 Oct 1677at the age of 86.

Rehoboth
xxx Perhaps a more serious attempt to move Plymouth came about in 1644, when because of the "straightnes and barrennes of [Plymouth] and theirfinding of better accomodations elsewhere, more suitable to their endsand minds; and sundrie others still upon every occasion desiring theirdismissions, the church begane seriously to thinke whether it were notbetter joyntly to remove to some other place." After many meetings, thePlymouth people gave their attention to moving to Nauset on Cape Cod, oneof the three areas reserved to the Purchasers, who were in agreement forthe move. There then occurred a change of heart, for "now they begane tosee their errour, that they had given away already the best and mostcommodious places to others, and now wanted them selves." Nauset was toosmall and too remote, so Plymouth remained as it was. Still, this was theoccasion for the establishment of yet another new town, and an undatedlist probably made in the 1640s shows that the freemen there were ThomasPrence, John Doane, Edward Bangs, Nicholas Snow, John Jenkins, JosiahCooke, Samuel Hicks, John Smalley, Joseph Rogers, and Richard Higginson. On 3 March 1644/45 the General Court granted to the Plymouth Church "orthose that goe to dwell at Nosett," all the land between sea and sea"from the Purchasors bounds at Naumskeckett to the Hering Brooke atBillingsgate." The court on 2 June 1646 ordered that "Nawsett" [p.77] bemade a township, and Samuel Hicks was appointed as constable. On 7 June1651 the court ordered the name of the town of Nauset to be changed toEastham.
