Individual:
RELATIONSHIP: Raymond TOMLINSON is the paternal grandfather to Frances May TOMLINSON, and great grandpop to her children.
In the 1960's Raymond's daughter, Gladys' cousin Annah (daughter of Florence), hired a genealogist and had family tree professionally researched. We had always known that Raymond TOMLINSON b.1881 was a Sioux Indian bloodline. When Mary married him, he was exiled from family events and the family was not to mention his heritage. However, his children and the generations that followed embraced him fully. Family notes indicate that the Indian bloodline is from Raymond Senior's mother, Dora MOSS. We know that Dora is the daughter of Mahlon Moss and his first wife. More research is needed to determine if the Indian line is from Mahlon Moss or his first wife.
When the genealogy was completed in the 1960's, the family traced, three generations before Raymond was Sitting Bull, Raymond's Great Grandfather. At this time the research continues. Family notes indicate the line is through Dora (nee Moss) Tomlinson, his mother.
(Sitting Bull (c.1831-1890), a Hunkpapa Lakota chief and holy man, was born on the Grand River in present-day South Dakota, at a place the Lakota called "Many Caches," because of the number of food storage pits they had dug the re. His native name is Tatanka-Iyotanka, which is often pictured as a buffalo bull, sitting on its haunches.
As a young man, Sitting Bull was elected a leader of the Strong Heart warrior society. Later he became a member of the Silent Eaters, a group concerned with tribal welfare. His first battle was at age 14, in a raid on the Crow. )
DOCUMENT: Raymond Walter Tomlinson, born March 6, 1881 applied for a social security number at the age of 55 in 1936. He has a PO Box in Croydon PA, and is employed by Rohm and Haas. The application is typed, which might m ean it was dictated to another, while it was typed. This may account for what seems to be a spelling error in his father's name. As written, Raymond W. Tomlinson, (Sr.)'s father is written as Adolpha Agustus Tomlinson, and mother Dora Moss. So far, census data reflects Adolphus Augustus is the spelling for this name.
However the link to Mary Henry Williams, his wife, is confirmed by her social security application. At the age of 88, Mary (nee Williams) Tomlinson was living with her daughter Gladys (nee Tomlinson) Buck, but was in declining health with Altzheimer's. At that time, her daughter likely had to file social security documents for her to collect benefits, which she had never done. The application shows her husband's social security number, and the family's known address in Bucks County. This confirms the family lineage, adding the names of their parents to the known line.
DOCUMENT: The Bucks County Gazette Newspaper, Bristol PA, dated June 23, 1904 -
"Marriage Licenses Granted: Raymond Tomlinson and Miss Mary Williams of Bristol."
This corresponds to later census data which notes their age when first married.
In the 1910 Miracode Index, Raymond (Sr.) is listed with wife Mary, son Earl, and daughter Gladys. The index is for Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA en. dist.#0551 (Earl is the grandfather to Ed, John, Nancy and Judy SABO L)
The 1920 census for Bristol Bucks Co PA further confirms this family, whose address appears to be 817 Pine Street in Bristol, now with a son Raymond Jr. born abt 1914. However, the census page 7a has only most of the family li sted. Raymond Jr. appears later due to clerical error, on the bottom of image 36/ page 18a. Raymond SR. is listed as a chauffeur for local express.
The 1930 census reflects that Raymond is still a driver, now a truck driver for chemical work. Six years later his social security application identifies Rohm & Haas as his employer. In 1930, only their youngest child, Raymon d Jr. is living at home, at 316 Otter Street in Bristol, enumeration district 10. This census reports the couples' ages when first married, setting the year at 1904, corresponding to the newspaper article mentioned earlier. Earl is already on his own, married, a father and divorced. It is one year into the great depression. Earl's home in 1930 is found in the census. (see Earl's bio)
The 1930 census also reflects a common census problem, the name is spelled as it was heard and is recorded as "Tomleson". (Oddly enough, that same year, Raymond's daughter-in-law Mary Lee and granddaughter Frances May appear i n another section of the 1930 Bristol census, spelled "Tombleson".)
