King of Scotland (839-860); King of Picts (c.841) & Scots (c.834); Traditional founder of Sco ttish Kingdom
Most lists of kings of Scots begin with him. Indeed, it is from him that the modern British m onarchy traces its descent. He reigned from 842 to 858, although his final victory over Pictish opposition came as late as 847. He built a cathedral in Dunkeld honoring St. Columba and had her relics moved there. His reign was a time of almost constant warfare, including devastating Viking raids. He was succeeded by his younger brother, Domnall.
