Individual:
DAVID FRENCH came from Connecticut Farms, now Union, and settled about one mile east of Davi d Smalley's, Esq. He had a brother, John French, who lived where Thomas Conn now does, who sold out to Mr. Conn, and went to the lakes, New York. David French married, 30th May, 1776, Sarah Willcox, daughter of William, son of Peter Willcocks, Sen., and had children:
1. Benjamin, who married Polly Collard, daughter of Benjamin Collard. 2. Polly married Davi d Hays, of Westfield. 3. Willis married Hannah Hetfield, daughter of Moses, of Westfield. 4. Levi married Fanny Dunham, daughter of John, Jun., and went to the lakes. 5. Sally married James Williamson, of Monmouth county. 6. David, Jun., married, 2d November, 1809, Margaret Noe, daughter of Lewis Noe. 7. Cornelius married Sally Winans, above Morristown, and went to the lakes. 8. Betsey married John Corwin, son of Stephen. [See Corwin.] 9. Phebe married Moses Moore, son of Isaac Moore. [See Moore.] 10. Nancy married Moses S. Littell, son of Master Benjamin Littell; went to the lakes. [See Littell.]

E-mail information from From: "Jim Gunderson" >To: >Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 12:5 5 AMSubject: Cornelius French genealogyI agree with you that Cornelius was a son of David A. French and Sarah Wilcox. But we part on David's ancestry. I believe that David A. was a son of Robert C. and Mary Willis, not the John and Mary in your records. Robert C. had 2 wives, Mary Willis and Joanna Osborne. The John and Mary French in your records is believed by Denise and Jan to have had sons David - but not the David A. in your line - and Noah, "Express Rider" which is their line. The common connection with Denise and Jan is Richard and Elizabeth French - parents of Robert C. of my line (and likely your line) and John, father of Noah French "Express Rider". Further, we are not inclined to go along with the connection to the Nether Heyford line. But the records are not all that clear. Here is my current thinking - always subject to change if the research warrants: I have Cornelius as a son of David A. and Sarah Wilcox. Then David A. as a son of Robert C. and Mary Willis. Then Robert C. as a son of Richard and Elizabeth. Then Richard as a son of "John French, Brick Mason" who was in Woodbridge around 1680. Nothing further back although it is possible that the founders of Woodbridge "imported" John French, Brick Mason, from Mass. where several of the founders of Woodbridge originated. They brought in several crafts - very possibly including John the Brick Mason. I have not spent the time necessary to research that any farther, though. There was some very good research (at least it sounds good to me) done by Alfred Lyman Holman in the 1920s on what I believe is our French line in NJ. I will be happy to share it with you. I found it in the vertical files at the NGS in Washington , DC. From Holman's material and other digging that I have done, I DO NOT believe that our French line connects to the Nether Heyford French line (although I would like it to). The Nether Heyford bunch who came to NJ were in a different area in NJ and were Quakers. Not a good fit for our Essex Co. folks, in my view. I have been working on this family for more than 20 years - my mother's maiden name was French. Her line goes back to Steuben Co., NY, and then to Essex Co., NJ, via Philemon French, son of Robert C. French and Joanna Osborn, and a half brother of your John, father of David A. I printed a book of descendants of Robert C. in May, 1998, and was just ready to re-print it due to lots of new additions. I have held that up pending the incorporation of the Cornelius French line that I just came upon a few mos. ago.
