Individual:
Sheriff of Hereford & Glamorganshire - Keeper of Caerphilly Castle.------------------------- ------------------------------------Burke's Peerage on Chandos-previous creations:In 1337 Sir Roger de Chaundos, of a family from the Herefordshire-Shropshire borders, was called to Parliament by writ, thus being created Lord (Baron) Chaundos according to later doctrine, although none of his successors were ever called to Parliament under this title. Candos, of which both Chaundos and Chandos appear to be corruptions, is in Normandy, some 10 miles northwest of Rouen. (The famous Garter Knight Sir John Chaundos was of a different family, settled in Derbyshire) On the death in 1428 of Roger's grandson Sir John, any peerage created by the writ of 1337 would have fallen into abeyance, though within 30 years this abeyance would have been terminated by the death of the only other coheir and the notional Barony would have become vested in Sir John's great-nephew Giles Brugge.
----------------------------------------------------------------BARONY of CHAUNDOS (I) 1337 SIR ROGER DE CHAUNDOS, son and heir of Robert DE CHAUNDOS (c), of Snodhill, Wellington, and Fownhope, co. He was knighted, with the Prince of Wales, 22 May 1306. Sheriff of co. Hereford, 1311/2-14, 1322-27, 1328-31/2, and 1334. Appointed Keeper and Sheriff of the land of Glamorgan and Morganwg, 1 December 1326, Keeper of Caerphilly Castle, 30 December 1326, and Sheriff of Glamorgan and Morgatiwg, 8 March 1329/30. On 6 February 1332/3 the King took his fealty, and he had livery of the lands lately held by Thomas, his brother (i). Knight of the Shire for co. Hereford, 1318, 1322, 1340, and 1343. He was summoned for Military Service from 21 March 1332/3 to 4 July 1345, to Councils from 23 April 1337 to 15 July 1353, and to Parliament from 20 December 1337 to 20 September 1355 (twice after his death), by writs directed Rogero Chaundos or de Chaundos, whereby he is held to have become LORD CHAUNDOS, but none of his descendants were ever summoned to Parliament in respect of this Barony. He m., 1stly, it is said, Katherine, daughter of Richard TALBOT, of Eccleswall, co. Hereford, by Sarah, daughter of William (DE BEAUCHAMP), EARL OF WARWICK. She died s.p.m. He married, 2ndly, before 12 April 1315, Maud, widow of Nicholas DE POINTZ, 2nd LORD POINTZ (who died shortly before 12 July 1311), sister, and in her issue heir of John D'ACTON, of Iron Acton, co. Gloucester, daughter of John D'ACTON of the same, by his 1st wife, Helen. He died 24 September 1353. His widow had livery of the manor of Wellington, 12 November 1353. She died 15 August 1361. [Complete Peerage III:147-8, XIV:167, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)](c) His arms were, Or, a pile Gules. There was another family of Chaundos, of Radburn and Mugginton, co. Derby, of which was the celebrated Sir John Chaundos, KG. Candos is between Barentin and the Seine.(d) He [Robert de Chaundos] held Snodhill, 1 fee, Wellington, 1/3 of 2 fees, and Fownhope, 1/2 fee; also 1/2 fee in Shipton Solars, and Badginton, 1 fee, co. Gloucester: all held of the King in chief. He had livery of his lands 8 Jan 1265/6, being son and heir of Roger (who was under age 1232), heir of Roger de Chaundos (under age 1220, d. shortly before 12 Dec 1232), heir of Robert de Chaundos (d. shortly before 23 Oct 1220), who left a widow Sarah.(e) This Inq.P.M is now defaced, but it is said that his son and heir, Roger, was therein described as aged 20.(i) This Master Thomas de Chaundos was Archbishop of Hereford, and held the manor of Lugwardine.
