Individual:
William L Baker, born in McMinn county, Tennessee, was moved to Independence county, Arkansas as a baby. He served in CSA, Company I, 7th Arkansas Infantry, also known as Rutherford's Regiment. On May 7, 1864 he was captured in Independence county, Arkansas and was confined in a POW prison at Little Rock, Arkansas. During the war in this still frontier country, men would get leave to go home during planting and harvesting time. Perhaps this is why William was captured in his home county? He was transferred to New Orleans, Louisiana on a prisoner exchange and released May 4, 1865. He was described as being 5'11", blue eyes, dark complexion and dark hair. He signed his name with his mark X He was listed as being twenty-three years old. On May 7, 1865 he was just fifteen days short of his twenty-seventh birthday.
William L Baker never returned home after his release. It is believed he died of wounds or disease. There is no record of him being in the household in the 1870 census, and nothing is known of his family as of this time.
