- Mamie Geneva Doud was born in Boone, Iowa, on November 14, 1896, the
daughte r of John Sheldon and Elivera Mathilda Carlson Doud. When Mamie
was nine mont hs old, in August 1897, the family moved to Cedar Rapids,
Iowa. At age six, s he moved with her family to Pueblo, Colorado, and then
to Colorado Springs. T hey lived in each of these places only a short
time, and in 1905 moved to Den ver. The house at 750 Lafayette remained in
the family until after the death of Mamie's mother in 1960.
Mamie Doud attended Denver public schools and Miss Wolcott's, a private
finishing school attended by daughters of many prominen t Denver families.
Mamie met the then Second Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower in October,
1915 while visiting friends at Fort Sam Houston, in Texas. The Do uds had
rented a house in San Antonio for the winter. The young officer, just out
of West Point, courted Miss Doud and on February 14, 1916, they formally
announced their engagement. The engagement ring was a miniature copy of
Ik e's West Point ring, amethyst set in gold.
Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mamie Dou d were married at noon on July 1, 1916,
in the Doud family home in Denver--th e same day Ike received his first
army promotion. They had a ten-day honeymoo n, spending the first days in
Colorado, then a few days visiting the Eisenhow er family in Abilene,
Kansas.
The newlyweds established their first home in Ike's two-room bachelor
quarters at Fort Sam Houston. The First Lieutenant's pay was $161.67 per
month. They had only an improvised kitchen, consisting o f a hot plate,
percolator, chafing dish, etc.--appliances that could be hidde n away
behind curtains and in closets. Mrs. Eisenhower admitted that at the t ime
she was married she could make only fudge and mayonnaise, and that Ike
taught her to cook.
Two sons were born to the Eisenhowers. The first, Doud Dw ight Eisenhower,
was born on September 24, 1917. "Little Icky", as he was nic knamed, died
of scarlet fever on January 2, 1921. The second son, John Sheldo n Doud
Eisenhower, was born in Denver on August 3, 1922. On July 10, 1947, he
married Barbara Jean Thompson. They had four children: Dwight David
Eisenh ower II, born March 31, 1948; Barbara Anne, born May 30, 1949;
Susan Elaine, born December 31, 1951; and Mary Jean, born December 21,
1955. There are eigh t Eisenhower great-grandchildren.
General and Mrs. Eisenhower lived in variou s army posts in the United
States and around the world. From their small quar ters at Fort Sam
Houston, they moved to their first real home--a white pillar ed fraternity
house at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where Ike commanded the Tank Corps
Training Center at Camp Colt. After Camp Colt they were transferred to
Camp Meade, Maryland, and then to Camp Gaillard in the Panama Canal Zone.
In 1924, they returned to Camp Meade, and then to Fort Logan, Colorado.
Eisen hower then received an appointment to the Command and General Staff
School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from which he graduated first in his
class, in 192 6. After Fort Leavenworth, they spent a few months at Fort
Benning, Georgia, before Ike was named to serve with the American Battle
Monuments Commission. With this new assignment, they took an apartment in
Washington, D.C., where M amie remained until 1936, except for a short
stay in Paris.
When Ike was tr ansferred to the Philippines in 1935, Mamie elected to
remain with son John i n the United States for a year before joining Ike
in Manila. They returned to the U.S. in 1941. When the Pearl Harbor
attack occurred, Ike was Chief of St aff of the Third Army at Fort Sam
Houston in Sa
