Individual:
JOHN MILTON CRISP SPENT TIME IN PRISON. HE AND SCHRILLDA MAYS WERE DIVORCED AND HE REMARRIED.
My great grandmother was Schrillda Mays, who married John M. Crisp, a full blood Cherokee. Schrillda's parents were Margaret Slusher and James Mays. It was my understanding that James was a full blood Cherokee and that Margaret was possibly half.
You will probably not find "proof" that they were Cherokee. My grandmother often told me the stories her father had told her as a child of his grandparents leaving the Cherokee nation after the trail of tears and returning to Kentucky because they knew the death and despair that would come from being on the reservation and that they knew they could pass off as white. My great grandfather was a Crisp, and this family seemed to intermarry a lot with the Mays and the Clicks, another strong indicator of Cherokees staying within their own. Is this the way it is with yours?
I will get back to you soon.
That is all the info that I have on them. My grandmother used to tell me that
her father was a Cherokee Indian and that she had 2 uncles that could "prove"
their ancestry and moved to Oklahoma and lived on the reservation.
from my cousin Kellie
