The following is taken from Canadian Transportation, November1950 issue."Horace C. Grout, who retired from the presidency of theMinneapolis, St. Paul and Sault St. Marie Railroad at the end oflast year, remaining as s member of the directorate and of theexecutive committee, died in hospital in Montreal, October 10,aged 69. His retirement from the Soo Line presidency marked theculmination of nearly 52 years of distinguished active servicewith the Canadian Pacific and the Soo Line. Mr. Grout was bornat Wausau, Wis., in 1881, and was educated at NorthwesternMilitary Academy and the University of Wisconsin. He enteredCanadian Pacific Railway service as a rodman in British Columbiain 1898, and following appointments in railway service were;April 1907, Assistant Division Engineer, Toronto; April 1908,Resident Engineer, Toronto;April 1909, Assistant Superintendent, Toronto, and from January,1910, at Havelock, Ontario; February, 1912, Superintendent,Toronto, and from July 1912, at Brownville Jet, Maine; November1912 Assistant General Superintendent, Atlantic Division, SaintJohn; May, 1913 Acting General Superintendent, AtlanticDivision, Saint John; September, 1914, General Superintendent,Atlantic Division, Saint John, and from April 1920, of OntarioDistrict, Toronto; October, 1934, Assistant to the VicePresident, Montreal;May, 1942, General Manager, Western Lines, Winnipeg; April,1944, Chief Executive Officer, Minneapolis, St. Paul and SaultSte. Marie Railroad Company; September, 1944, President,Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad Company -During his tenure of office as President of the Soo Line, Mr.Grout completely re-organized that property, and during his longcareer with the C.P.R. he gained a reputation for his executiveand operating ability. Surviving Mr. Grout are his wife, adaughter and two sons."
