We had the pleasure of meeting with John and Meryl at their home on Marco Island, Florida. We exchanged some genealogical material. It was a memorable time.

Dr. John F. Fairbairn II
Dr. John Fitzgerald Fairbairn II, age 81, of Marco Island and Hayward, Wis., and formerly of Rochester, Minn., died June 29, 2004, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.
Dr. Fairbairn was born Nov. 2, 1922, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Thomas S.A. and Helen (Pumyea) Fairbairn. He attended college and medical school at the University of Buffalo and graduated from medical school in 1945.
He subsequently served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1947. After additional medical training, he joined the Mayo Foundation on a fellowship from the National Heart Institute as a trainee in peripheral vascular disease. He later joined the Mayo Clinic Staff iNew Jerseyuly 1956 as an expert in vascular medicine.
ONew Jerseyan. 23, 1960, he married Meryl A. Oilman in Minneapolis.
Dr. Fairbairn was an internationally recognized expert and pioneer in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease and served as an editor of the textbook Peripheral Vascular Disease. He was recognized as a master clinician and expert in diverse vascular diseases, and had an unwavering commitment to his patients and their needs. An emeritus cardiologist, he remained on the Mayo Clinic staff until his retirement in November 1987.
In retirement, he devoted his time to his passion, genealogy research.
He is survived by his wife, Meryl; one daughter, Karen Fairbairn-Nath, Rochester; two grandchildren, Thomas and Meryl; two sisters, Eleanor Heckman of Buffalo, N.Y., and Catherine Parratt of Syracuse, N.Y.; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his son, Bruce; and by his parents.
Funeral services and interment took place in Hayward. Memorials may be directed to the Olmstead County Historical Society, Genealogy Library; or the Hayward Sports Center, Bruce Fairbairn Room.
