| Descendants of George Lund |
George Lund, from whom Lunds in New Brunswick, Maine, out west and elsewhere take their name, was a fascinating man. It appears that his ancestors lived in pre-revolutionary America from the 1600s, and that he was related to a Jeremiah Lund who came up to the Sackville, NB Canada area from New England in the 1760s. He had sailed with the British navy and been at the battle of Trafalgar with Horatio Nelson, but jumped ship reportedly near Halifax after the War of 1812. In 1821 he married Jane Ibbitson in Sackville: she had come from Yorkshire with her family and her son John (my g'g'grandfather). George became one of the pioneer farmers in nearby Cookville, had children George Jr, Frances and Ann with Jane, then disappeared. Years after establishing all this, and wondering what happened to George, I learned that 2 George Lunds and many descendants were recorded in Washington County, Maine, just across the Canadian border, since the 1850s. Descendants in the area tell the story of these Lunds. George Sr had fled across the border into Maine because British authorities were looking for him. George Jr accompanied him or joined him soon after. He saw action in the US Civil War and had 19 children by 3 wives. One of them, Horatio Nelson Lund (who had 23 children) loved to tell stories of his grandfather's exploits. He and his descendants maintained contact for a time with the families of Robert Thistlewood and John Edward Beach (b abt 1786, Gloucester,England), and there were several marriages between them. This file includes all the Maine descendants of George Lund Sr I have found, but there are many more. The Manships and Griffins, descended from George's daughters, appear in both Canada and Maine. Also included here are Thistlewood and Beach descendants also in both countries. Input and queries are welcome.
