The Ship Jumpers
I and all my Lund relatives take our name from George Lund, abt 1790 - abt 1865. We know for sure that he lived in Sackville New Brunswick Canada from at least 1821, when he married Jane Ibbitson there, to some time before 1860 when he was recorded in the census in Plantation 19 north of East Machias, Maine (unincorporated, it is now known locally as Lunds’ Corner). Jane had an infant son John, my greatgreatgrandfather, whom she brought with her when her family emigrated from Yorkshire to the Sackville NB area. Jane and George had at least 3 children, George Jr, Ann, and Frances. Both George Sr and George Jr had disappeared from Sackville, and Canada entirely, by the 1850s: George and Jane Lund's descendants in Canada lost any knowledge of them. I had been researching the Lund family for several years before I heard from Kathryn Kelly, a genealogy enthusiast in Maine. She told me the story of “the ship jumpers”, 3 sailors who had literally jumped from a British naval ship during the War of 1812. They were Robert THISTLEWOOD, John BEACH, and George LUND. She also shared a transcript of a 1990 interview with George Irving Lund, George’s greatgrandson, who provided details about the “jumpers”, their escape from a British warship, where they went and connections between their descendants. George had gone to Sackville but fled because the authorities weres after him. For the first few generations, all the Thistlewoods and some Beaches lived in Washington County Maine (Kathryn has ancestors from both families). This file records the descendants of the 3 Jumpers, many in Maine but also in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (the jump occurred in the Halifax NS harbour, some Beaches settled in NS and NB). Several Beach descendants have confirmed the story, and one still has John Beach’s pistol handed down through the generations. This file also records the descendants of George Lund and Jane's daughters Ann, who married Jairus "James" Griffin in Calais ME in 1853, and Frances "Fannie" who married John Manship: their son James Manship married Carrie Glass in Calais and had a large family there. Not included is Captain Henry Alexander Lund who was born a Towse and adopted by George and Jane: he became a sea captain out of Calais. The attraction of Calais to these other Lunds is an interesting question.
