| Pipestone Valley Settlers |
The Pipestone Creek crosses the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border between Elkhorn MB and Maryfield SK. The area has some of the finest farmland in the Canadian prairies. Settlement began in 1882 when John "Wes" Lund and several other homesteaders rode the Canadian Pacific Railway to Brandon, as far as the line had been built by then, and continued on to settle along the Pipestone's banks. The Lunds, Weldons, and Simpsons from New Brunswick, Rowands, Paulls and Scotts from Scotland, Adairs amd Paulls from Ireland, and others, were pioneers in the area. Names given to the area included Lippentott and Woodville, postal district names that are no longer used, and the present day village of Kola. Some of the known pioneer families are included here: there were frequent marriages between families with the result that many of us today are descendants of several of them.
