Sackville in the 1860s - Things that I Remember
by Willard Wry (1934 - ?)
In the 1860s, extensive shipbuilding was carried on in Sackville. Messrs. (Mariner) Wood and (Amos) Ogden were building, also Christopher Boultenhouse. Down at Westcock, Mr Henry and sons were also building and at Wood Point, Mr Charles Barnes, Clifford and Henry Atkinson built one or more schooners.
Messrs. Wood and Ogden built the following Barks: Onaway [ 1 877] commanded by Cptn. Wilmott, Kwasind commanded by Cpt n . Charles Moses, Siddartha (1880] commanded by Cptn. Will ia m Sprague. There was also a brig called the Herbert. She was commanded by Cptn. Elisha Towse.
Starting at Crane's Corner, the land laying south along Ma i n Street to where the Miller block stands, also along Bri dg e St., just beyond the Cape Railway was owned by Mr. Hen r y Allison, as a farm, and contained only one small buildi n g except the home and a schoolhouse occupied by Mr. Gra y a s a beauty parlor. That portion of land between Mr. Woo d and Son's store and Squire Street, running north to th e marsh , was occupied and I think owned by Cptn. Towse an d later s old to Dr. Weldon, who owned and occupied it fo r a number o f years.

I have a memoir written by Frank Towse, son of my great-gr a ndfather Master Mariner Elisha Towse. Frank was not likely ever a sea captain; he served on his father's ships, fi rs t as cabin boy, then as able seaman. The memoirs contai n fr equent mention of Sackville, Westcott (Frank's spelling, i e Westcock), Elisha's ship-building partner Mariner Wood, the cargos to and from Caribbean, Great Britain, etc.
In 2000, we drove out around the water's edge road, and I knew where Elisha's home had been. The reason there was pasture, where there used to be a dock, is that the Tantramar changed its course, so I've been told.

From The History of Sackville, by W.C. Milner
CHARLES DIXON
The following paper was read before the Chignecto Historical Society on 9th July 1892, at the celebration on the Dixon homestead of the 120th anniversary of the landing of Charles Dixon at Sackville, by his grandson, James D. Dixon, Esq.:
To the ridge of land upon which we stand belongs perhaps as much of historic interest as any spot in Sackville. Upon it once stood a row of tenements erected and inhabited by the Acadian French. As the French gained access by water conveyance to the country threading the various rivers and streams in boats and small vessels, and as at this point the upland extends to the river which, with a single exception it does not do upon the whole length of the Tantramar, thus affording exceptional facilities for landing. I deem it more than probable they first landed and commenced their occupation of Sackville at this point. The marsh land to the Eastward now called the Dixon Island marsh, to the extent of 200 acres and upwards was reclaimed, occupied and cultivated by them from which they derived their principal means of support. Traces of these tenements were distinctly visible 50 years ago...
One hundred and twenty years have passed since Charles Dixon, one of the first of the Yorkshire immigrants, who were induced to come to Nova Scotia by the influence of Lieutenant Governor Franklyn, arrived and settled upon this farm, with his family consisting of his wife and four children. ..Mr. Dixon found a refuge for his family in the Fort a couple of weeks, and (then purchased) the property upon which we are assembled to which he removed his family on the 8th of June, 1772. The property consisted of 2,500 acres in all, 186 acres of which was marsh, nearly all of which was dyked and 35 acres of improved upland. There was also a farm of 200 acres... The balance of his purchase consisted of 2000 acres of wilderness land nearly 700 of which lay on the lower Fairfield road to the south-west. .. A house and barn stood upon the property very near where the house of the late *Captain Towse now stands.

from The White Fence (Tantramar Heritage Society newsletter) #4
The 1850s was Sackville port's busiest decade with 32 ships constructed. The Sarah Dixon built by Charles Dixon in 1856 was the largest at 1,468 tons. Between 1868 and 1872, the single largest com- modity brought into the port was flour shipped from New York, Boston and Philadelphia. 1880 was the busiest year for ships leaving Sackville: 53 vessels departed including 5 for Britain, 10 for the Caribbean, 16 for the Mid-Atlantic states and 22 for New England? Think of this when you look toward Sackville from Westcock, especially the location of the old port where the Ram Pasture is today.
