Yorkshire Settlers: 2nd Wave
By 1775, Britain was facing a revolution in the American colonies. Emigration to British North America stopped as ships were turned to military purposes. Overseas travel remained minimal due to the Napoleonic Wars, followed by the War of 1812-1814. It wasn't until 1816 that large-scale emigration began again. America was still hostile to the British, but British North America was attractive to returning soldiers and relatives of the earlier settlers. Yorkshire men were again among the first to emigrate when the opportunity arose, in what is called a "second wave" of settlers. Through the war years, Prince Edward Island had been an important source of timber and the port of Charlottetown had grown extensively. Much of the renewed immigration from Britain came through the Island. One well-documented sailing was that of the Valiant out of Hull, Yorkshire, which arrived in Charlottetown in May 1817. Some of those aboard remained in PEI, among them the founders of the town of Little York. Those who moved on to the Chignecto region included Thomas Fawcett, John and Jonathan Milner, Robert Mitton, John Towse, and their families.Another documented sailing was that of the The Trafalgar in the same year, from Hull to St. John, NB bringing the Thomas Beal family, David Cook (founder of Cookville) and the Lowthers: William, Joseph, Rufus and Thomas. Both these sailings were eventful. The Valiant, during its 8 week voyage, came across a Scotch Brig in a sinking condition, and took on its 60 passengers and crew (including Robert Mitton). On Aug 2, 1817, the Courier of Saint John reported: "Ship wreck! On Friday evening last, about half-past eight o'clock, the ship Trafalgar went ashore on Briar Island in a very thick fog - the ship will be a total wreck... It had 159 passengers, which, together with crew, were all saved." Other immigrants of this period are listed here, by means and of dates unknown.
