The Chignecto region at the head of the Bay of Fundy includes the areas surrounding Sackville New Brunswick and Amherst Nova Scotia, on either side of the border. The earliest inhabitants were the MicMac aboriginal people. The first European settlers were French-speaking Acadians, many of whom were expelled by the British in the 1750s. Thereafter, settlers were...1. the Planters from New England, invited up in the 1760s and 1770s from the 13 Colonies. Many of these did not stay, so the Governor Michael Francklin went to England to recruit...2. the Yorkshire Settlers, mostly Methodist farmers who were suffering discrimination and were the first to respond. Between 1772-1776, over 100 families made the difficult ocean voyage. Very few European settlers came for the next 40 years due to the American Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812-1815. Then came...3. a Second Wave of Yorkshire folk including relatives of earlier settlers such as the Ibbitsons, also my g'g'grandfather John Lund (son of Jane Ibbitson), his wife Mary Ann Towse's family and others...4. Scottish and Irish settlers, many of whom were Protestants of Scottish stock from Northern Ireland...5. Loyalists after the American Revolution, although most settled in the virgin lands around St John and Fredericton. To view the list of settlers I have identified, search for "Settlers" as a surname. Scroll down to view the notes for background information and sources where I've recorded these. NOTE: virtually all this data is 2nd hand, and I can not vouch for its accuracy. Corrections and additional information are very welcome.
