There is a William Doble in the 1820 US Census in Brooks, Hancock, ME. There are 11 individuals in the household. I am not certain this is William Doble, son of John and Abigail Doble.
There is a William and a Solomon in Sumner, Oxford Co., ME, in the 1830 census.
********************************************************************************
This William was not found in the Boston records at Christ's Church, nor was Peter found there. The reason may be they were born in Braintree rather than Boston..Per ProGenealogists, Inc. Or perhaps they went to PA.
In early life William Doble worked on the farm of Abraham Varnum, in Dracut, MA, where he also learned the trade of carpenter. He removed soon afterwards to Lewiston Falls, ME where he helped build the first saw mill in that locality. His wife was Sarah Varnum who was the only woman in the company that made the difficult and dangerous trip through the wilderness.
William had a grant of one hundred and sixty acres in Buckfield, Maine where he built a log house on the west branch of the Androscoggin River. In the "History of Buckfield" he is listed as one of the 19 new settlers arriving in the Buckfield township during 1779 or 1780. He exchanged this land for one at West Sumner, Oxford, ME later.
It is also recorded that William Doble settled on the Twenty Mile River where he owned a "Settling Lot," identified as Lot #9, W. Div. and that he lived on the lot until his death. This conflicts with other information that he exchanged this farm later for one in West Sumner, Oxford County, ME, having the same number of acres located in the west part of the town about two miles from Jackson Village.
William became a prosperous farmer and also followed his trade of carpenter. He was fond of music, had a good voice and played the violin often for the country dances. He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church at Sumner. He married his intended on December 10, 1774. (Excerpts from History of Buckfield (Family Tree Maker, Vol. #7) (Added by Myrna Doble McGhie, 1999))
Family Notes on Marriage with Sarah Ellen Varnum: Text: 4th great grandparents
Some sources say that William also married Mary Symonds (born 1811) and had one son, William Doble b. 1833.
