!my grandma, short, black hair, blue eyes; loved her ki d s & grandkids, always cried with me on the phone. She sa i d she was good at baseball & the boys in Arkansas let he r p lay first base. She liked guys. She met grandpa Guss a t a p ie supper at a church in Arkansas. They moved to Ne w York a bout 1934; bought farm abt 1949 in Webster, to ge t out of w ooden tenements in Rochester. Sister-in-law Mar y Essie Dun n co-signed with them, as she had a busines s & credit. The y didn't. She loved to cook & talk. Fixed e xcellent green b eans (Blue Lake breed) and made us sweet r ice for dessert , or homemade black raspberry ice cream (4t h July); sat und er big elm & maple trees in side yard by k itchen. Had a re d pump by back step for water. We had East er egg hunts in f ront yard there, 5cents if you found th e one painted silver . Lots of fun on their farm: had chick en coop, hog pen, cow s & 2 barns; lots of feed grain field s, and she was proud : grandpa gave her a 1/4 acre plot fo r a "kitchen" garden , so she could grow what she canne d & bottled each year. Sh e was raised poor--working in cot ton fields and tending he r brothers; married very young. H er dad "Jack" made them si lver wedding bands, as they coul dn't afford them. He worke d metals. He had a lot of Cherok ee in him, I've heard. So d id her mom Gracie, who made eac h of her greatgranddaughter s a star-shaped red velvet pinc ushion covered with glass in dian beads, abt 1971. I love d grandma's fresh giant "Beefst eak" tomatoes she grew, fir m crunchy cucumbers, & lots of m ilk--all I could drink. An d fresh strawberries & black rasp berries they grew. Perfum y & yummy to eat.
