INFO: The Name McKnitt is spelled at least twenty diffe r ent ways, the two most common are: "McKnitt"(MacKnitt) a n d "McKnett", with McKnight and McNitt also numerous. In S co tland the name was originally spelled McNaughton. Probably the McKnitt family, along with the King, Alexa n der, and Blair families and others, left Scotland becaus e t hey had taken part in the Reformation, adopting the tea chin g of John Knox. They became known as the "Old Scotch C ovent ers". Under the persecution of Cardinal Beaton and Ca rdina l Hamilton they fled to Ulster, Northern Ireland, an d late r came to Maryland. "It is uncertain whether the McKnitts landed in Philade l phis or New Castle-on-Delaware, or at one of the Easter n Sh ore of Virginia ports of entry. We know that they di d not r emain there, but located instead on the west side o f the Po comoke River." (John McKnitt & Some of His Kinfolk : Alexand ers- Vol.XVI, pp.75-95). John McKnitt acquired 8 8 acres o f a tract called the "Strand", which was in the M anokin are a, shortly after his arrival in Somerset County , Maryland . Here he and his family lived until around 170 2 when he mo ved to Cecil County, Maryland. In Cecil Count y on 15 June 1 713 he acquired a tract called "Glasgow", co nsisting of 9 0 acres.
