BIOGRAPHY: Robert Brevard, third son and fourth chil d o f John Brevard, Sr. and Katherine McKnitt Brevard, wa s bor n "near the Head of Elk(River)" in Cecil County, Mary land,o n 10 January 1718. Robert married Sarah Craig (Crag , Craige ) on 6 April 1744. This marriage is thought to hav e taken p lace in Maryland, but may have occured in Anson(R owan) Coun ty, North Carolina, where Robert appears in earl y colonia l records.
Robert Brevard migrated to Rowan County, North Carolin a , with his brothers, John and Zebulon, and his sister Eli za beth circa 1745. Robert entered upon land at the headwat er s pf Rocky River, located between lands owned by James a n d John Templeton, and George and Samuel Davidson. On 29 S ep tember 1749 he petitioned the Council of North Carolin a fo r a warrant of land- 640 acres. He made a second petit ion f or a grant of patent on 640 acres in Anson, Rowan Cou nty o n 28 March 1751. Lord Granville granted to Robert Brevard of Anson(lat e r Rowan) County, North Carolina, 640 acres on Rocky Rive r i n that county on 25 March 1752. On 29 January 1755 Gran vill e made a further grant to Robert Brevard of Rowan Coun ty, N orth Carolina, of 102 acres on Rocky River.(Rowan Cou nty De ed Books III, pp. 156-159; IV, pp.857-858)
Robert Brevard, along with James Alexander, taught scho o l in Rowan County before the Revolution. He owned only t w o slaves in 1768, and only seven in 1797, which would se e m to indicate that he did not farm extensively,(Carolin a Cr adle-Robert W. Ramsey. Following the Revolution Robert Brevard made a clai m t o the House of Commons and Senate of the State of Nort h Car olinain 1785. The nature and outcome of this claim we re no t clear. Perhaps he was applying for a pension or t o recove r property lost duriong the war. (State Records o f North Ca rolina, VOL.17,p.315; VOL. 20, p.32)
Robert and Sarah Brevard lived and died in Iredell Coun t y, North Carolina. This county had been formed from Rowa n i n 1788, and their residence through their time in Nort h Car olina, whether Anson, Rowan, or Iredell, had likely b een th e same for more then fifty years.
Robert Brevard drew up his will in August 1797, thre e y ears before his death on 20 October 1800. In his will h e be queathed tracts of land to his two youngest daughters . Appa rently the were unmarried at the time, so this woul d be dow ry for their future use. No other daughters were n amed, an d we can assume they had already been provided fo r at the t ime of their marriages.
Interesting bequeaths to his son Robert Brevard were: " M y still and Vessels" and "appraisement of a horse lost i n t he service of the United States". Robert was to be join t ex ecutor of his father's will with Alexander Young.
Adam and John Brevard, nephews of Robert Brevard, and J a mes Young(?) were witnesses to Robert's will. Adam and Jo h n were sons of John Brevard, Jr.
MILITARY: During the Revolution Robert Brevard served w i th Captain James Houston's Company of North Carolina Rang er s during the tour of Ramseur, in present day Randolph Co unt y, North Carolina. No Further record of service was fou nd . (National Archives, Military Service Records-R1234)
