Henri inherited the County of Luxembourg through his mother, Ermesinde of Luxembourg, the last member of the dynasty that was founded by Sigefroid in the 10th century.

Henri's first wife, Laurette of Upper-Lorraine was married to three husbands successively: Hendrik II of Arlon, Duke of Limburg (1150); Henri IV The Blind of Namur (1154); and Hendrik II of Wassenberg (1163).
