Notes
Individual:
Based on the approximate dates of the birth of his children by h
is first wife, I believe his date of birth is probably about 1690.
From Clan Macellan : The writings of Q. Slight McClellan and John McKie of Kirkcudbright indicate that Sir Robert (1685) had a son James (?), brother of Robert of Barclay, who had a son Robert, born about 1698, who came to America and married Elizabeth Ewing. (see Chapter F)

Chapter F states: Authorities differ regarding Sir Robert s family. Woodrow reports that he had six children (not named): three of them went with him to America in 1685 and all three children survived the voyage: the other three were left in Scotland with their mother. D. R. Torrance names six children: Mary, Ephriam, Robert, Samuel, Elizabeth, and Margaret (but Mary and Margaret might have been the same child). Mary married Gavin Lockhart who was transported on the same ship, and they had seven children in the U. S., one of whom, Samuel, returned to Scotland and inherited Barmagachan. M Kerlie lists only five children: Ephriam, Robert, Samuel, Mary (wife of Gavin Lockhart) and Elizabeth. John McKie lists the same five children given by M Kerlie, and states that another one, not named, had a son Robert, born 1698 (?) who came to America and married Elizabeth Ewing about 1720. Q. Slight McClellan also reports that Robert Maclellan who went to New Jersey, had a son, no name Maclellan, who was the father of Robert Maclellan, born 1698 (?) who came to New Jersey abt 1720. The son whose given name was not known, could have been the James shown in my records.

Clan McCellan offers another possibility for the ancestry of Robert: Another Robert McClellan, also a descendant of Sir Patrick Maclellan, was the 1st Lord of Kirkcudbright. Historians tracing the peerage record he had no male heir and that the title, 2nd Lord Kirkcudbright, thus devolved upon Thomas, son of Sir Robert s brother William. However Sir Robert s will (1638) provides for three naturalle sonnes , James, William and Robert. Could our Robert Maclellan (born 1698, came to America 1720 and married Elizabeth Ewing) have been a son or grandson of one Sir Robert s naturalle sonnes ?

Based on the above information, I am showing two possible fathers for Robert; James, the son of Robert and Marie Kirko, and the unknown great-grandson of Robert, 1st Lord of Kirkcudbright. I have arbirartily picked Lord Robert s naturalle sonne Robert as his grandfather.page ipages 34 & 35page ii
Bette Jo Caldwell shows the following report on her web page. Her sources are listed at the end of this report: Robert McClelland was probably born in Scotland around 1677. He married Elizabeth Ewing. They were the parents of Thomas McClelland who married Janet Trimble. Robert died in Chester Co., Pennsylvania in 1741.

"He was one of the three boys, who came to America with their father in 1685. Their father settled on a plantation near Woodbridge, New Jersey. One letter says he was an old man when he died. There were three sons of Robert and Elizabeth buried in Chester County, Penna. Their wills are recorded there. We know there was a daughter married to Samuel McCree." McClelland, Norman G. MCCLELLAND FAMILY HISTORY. n.p. 1935. In possession of John M. Wallace of North Beaver Twp., Lawrence Co., PA. Part 2. Pg. 2.

Betty Caldwell writes: According to CLAN MACLELLAN (McClelland, Raymond and John. CLAN MACLELLAN. Alexandria, VA.: Mcclelland Press, Inc. 1987. Page E-2,2-7.) Robert was born in 1698 and came to America in 1720. The book goes on to state that he may be the grandson of Robert(1630-1703) He was married twice. He had three children by his first wife and then seven children by Elizabeth. The sixth child, Thomas, was born in 1720 and Robert would have been 22 years of age.

This author has carefully studied the limited facts available to her and believes that either account could be possible. It would seem unlikely that a man could have two wives and six children by the age of 22. However, if this Robert were the 12 year old son who returned to Scotland, he would be 43 years old in 1720.

Therefore, this author has chosen to accept the genealogy espoused by Norman McClelland and place Robert as the son of the Robert who was exiled in 1685. In 1722, Robert is listed in the tax records for Old Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. Monmetti, Orra. First Settlers of Ye Plantations of Piscataway and Woodbridge, Olde East New Jersey. California: Leroy Carman Press. 1931. Pg. 561.

Birth: McClelland, Norman G. MCCLELLAND FAMILY HISTORY. n.p. 1935. In
possession of John M. Wallace of North Beaver Twp., Lawrence
Co., PA. Part 2. Pg. 2.
Marriage: Will of James Ewing.
Death: Elizabeth McClelland Caldwell making petition for her share of inheritance.

Clan McCleelan states: Recent research by Richard Torrance shows that both Roberts returned to Scotland; that the son, later known as Robert of Barclay, was married but had no children, so could not have been our ancestor.
A GenForum message from M. Morris reads: Yes, we are related, but we are some kind of step cousins. Your Mary (b.1735)was the 10th child of Robert McClellan (1677-1741). She is from his second marriage to Elizabeth Ewing (~1690-1757). I am from the first family line wife's name unknown. Here are the siblings in order of birth.
William 1710-1782 m. Mary
Jane 1712- m. Miller
Isabel 1714- m. Hunter
Hugh 1716- m. Elizabeth Graham

2nd family with E. Ewing
Thomas 1720- m. Elizabeth Mitchell
m. Janet Trimble
Elizabeth 1722- m. Sam McCree
James 1727- m. Martha Caldwell
Samuel 1731- m. Mary Lindsey
Rebecca 1733- m. Charles McMicheal
Mary 1735- m. William Caldwell
Robert 1737- m. Agnes ?

I have that Robert McClellan 1677 who married both my unknown person and your Elizabeth Ewing was the son of Robert McClelland (~1630-1703 Scotland) His first wife was Marie Kirkco (~1661-1693) and his second wife was Marion Spence (1661). So far that is as far back as I have gotten. If you have any other info on your lines down from your Mary or Robert I'd like to know. Thanks, M. Morris
Ken McCrea states Robert was living in Middleton Twp., Chester Co., PA (now Delaware Co.) by 1729.

Larry Patrick Cornwall writes: In Ewing Families , written in 1910 by the Rev. Joseph Ewing, he states, There is a record of a Ewing settlement at Hopewell, New Jersey, about 1700. Here lived James Ewing where he raised a large family. His son, William, removed in 1722 to what is now Deleware County, Pennsylvania. James and his son-in-law Robert McCleland founded and built the third Presbyterian Church in the state of Pennsylvania.
Margaret Ewing Fife writes: Elizabeth Ewing was the second wife of Robert McClelan who was born ca 1680-90. He died prior to 2 Oct. 1741 when Letters of Administration of his esate were granted to Elizabeth McClelan, William Ewing and William Lindsey. page 84
Shirley Krenzler quotes from McClelland Family History : "He was one of the three boys, who came to America with their father in 1685. Their father settled on a plantation near Woobridge, New Jersey. One letter says he was an old man when he died. There were three sons of Robert and Elizabeth buried in Chester County Penna. Their wills are recorded there. We know there was a daughter married to Samuel McCree."

Bonnie Lacey shows Thomas as a son of Robert McClellan and Marie Kirkco. This Thomas is listed as the father of the Robert McClellan that married Elizabeth Ewing and shows a birthdate for him of 1691.
