Individual:
In Adventures of Purse and Person , a foot note for Cicely Farrar, born 1625, reads: 16. Holmes, The Farrar Island Family , p.123, speculates that she might have been the wife of Peter Montague. It is also possible Cicely Farrar married (1) Isaac Hutchins and (2) Henry Sherman
In the Sherman Family Genealogy Forum, there are several messages indicating Cecillia s maiden name was Farrar. Nearly all references in RootsWeb Family Trees show her as a Farrar. That said, it is still not proof.
John W. Pritchett states that Cecily was the sister of John Knowles. In 1685 William Giles and Bethania, his wife, only daughter and heiress of Capt. John Knowles, sold 125 acres to John Crowley for 2,200 pounds of tobacco. Then a minor, Bethania appointed loving friend Henry Sherman her attorney to relinquish her dower right in the land. Henry Sherman and John Sherman witnessed the deed. John Crowley was then Henry Sherman s son-in-law, the husband of Ann Sherman.
The phrase loving friend then suggested a non-blood relation. The most likely connection would be for Henry Sherman to be Bethania s uncle, the husband of John Knowles sister. Since we know Henry Sherman was married to Cecily, she would then have been Cecily Knowles, or Nowell as the name sometimes appeared.
This is indeed the case. Among the legatees of the will of Cecily Sherman was her granddaughter Susannah Trent. Susannah married second Daniel Nunnally and was the mother of not only Sherman Nunnally but also Nowell Nunnally.
Another posited Knowles daughter is Mary Knowles, who is said to be the wife of Robert Burton of Longfield. Among their children was Nowell Burton.
We do not know the name of the father of John, Mary, and Cecily Knowles, although it may have been John, as Henry Sherman and Robert Burton both had a son of that name.
While John Pritchett has some conviencing arguments for Cicely being a Knowles, I m going to leave her as a Farrar pending further evidence. This might be wishful thinking on my part since the Farrar line can be traced back to England and Knowles appears to be a dead end.
Elizabeth Trent, born about 1657, wife of Henry Trent, was before her marriage Elizabeth Sherman, daughter of Henry and Cisly Sherman. And Cisly Sherman before her marriage to Henry Sherman was the wife of Isaac Hutchins, whose will made in Henrico County, Feb. 23, 1656, named his heirs, his minor son, Robert Hutchins, and his wife Sisely. page 275
From Hutchins Family History, Surry County, NC: April Court, 1714, Henrico Co., VA, We the jurors...do find for the Plt. Imprintis that the said Isaac Hutchins died seized in fee of the land in question. Secondly we find the last will of the aforesd Lsaac dated the 23 of Feb. 1656 hereunto affixed. Thirdly we find that the aforesd Isaac left only one son named Robert who dyed under age and without issue. Fourthly, we find that Cicely the widow of the aforesaid Isaac was possessed of the lands in question. Fifthly we find that the aforesaid Cicely left one daughter named Elizabeth who is now the lawful wife of Henry Gee one of the Plts...For the Defendants we find that one Henry Sherman had issue by his wife Cicely the defedt Anne, whch said Anne did inter-marry with John Crowley and is now the wife of the Deft. Christopher Branch. We find a Deed from the said Cicely Sherman to the said Anne their daughter dated the 29th Dec. 1685 hereto annexed, etc...
