Individual:
James Akin was in Henrico County as early as May 6, 1673, when he and Richard Womack recieved a grant for 335 acres.
June 2, 1679 - James Akin, Abraham Womecke, Gilbert Elam SR., James Francklin, William Bllew, Thomas Jefferson, and some Pucketts were in Henrico County, listed on An account of ye several fortye Tythables...to fitt out men horse armes etc., for the defence of the country againest the incursions of the Indian Enemy.
Feb 1,1713 - James Akin, Sr's will left his wife "Indian woman Rose and her two children and his plantation for life." to each of his four chidldren, James left 12 pence each.Page 26
Eyvlene Canup writes: I am descended from James Akin, Sr. who was born 1631 and married in 1653 to Sarah ____ in Henrico Co VA. He made his will Apr 4, 1712 in Varina Parish of Henrico Co VA. The names of his children in his will are:
James Akin, Jr. b. 1662 d. 11-19-1743
Mary Akin b. 1655, d. 1725 m. John Womack,Sr.
Sarah Akin mar. ____Nunnely
Elizabeth Akin (my ancestor) born 1665 and mar. John Farley, Jr.
Bill McLean writes: There is a record of 17 persons, including JAMES EKIN , being transported to Virginia by William Walthall, merchant, dated 04 Oct 1657, on page 352, Volume I, of Nell Marion Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers, 1623-1666. Walthall received 1600 acres in Henrico Co., VA for the transport of these people. Since James Akin, Sr. was born around 1631 (deposition dated Dec 1677 gives his age as 46), then he would have been around 26 yrs old in 1657, the date of the patent. James Akin was granted 250 acres in Henrico Co. on 20 Oct 1665 (Cavaliers, Vol I, p 535). This date is about 7-8 years after the date of William Walthall's 1657 patent. Is this just coincidence, or did James Akin indenture himself for 7 years in order to pay for his passage to Virginia, and then acquire land of his own as soon as his term of servitude was up? If this is the case, then William Walthall's patent may be the record of James Akin's immigration to Virginia. If the place of origin of some of the other 16 persons who were transported along with him could be determined, perhaps we would have a clue as to the place of origin of James Akin.
Patrick Gudaitis writes about Atkins 1657 Virginia and the Walthall Patent and concludes: It is my opinion that all except the last two are from the lowlands of Scotland about the border with England. I suggest they set sail from Glasgow. Insights and thoughts welcomed.
In a follow-up e-mail, Patrick further writes: James Akin stated he was born in 1631 in a court deposition and in 1633 in another. He arrived in the Virginia Colony about the 1657 when William Walthall was given a land patent for 17 people of which James Eken was listed. ----
In Scotland, Akin is associated with the Clan Gordon. The Akin s appear to be Lowlanders, a people often over run in the numerous Scotch-English wars. They, more often, intermarried the English than the Highlanders did. There are notations for various Akin spellings in the Scotish Lowland.
William Hatcher writes: James Akin, Sr. of Henrico Co., Virginia, was most likely a Scots-Irish immigrant who came to Virginia from most likely northern Ireland (Ulster) in the 1600's. His family may have been born in Scotland and later moved to Northern Ireland (Ulster). (Note: None of this information has been proven as yet)
