Individual:
1 NOTE The grandson of Alfred the Great, Aethelstan succeeded his
father,Edward the Elder, to the throne of Wessex. He was the firstEnglishsovereign ever to be crowned on the King's Stone atKingston-upon-Thamesin 925. Incorrectly claimed by some to be the firstKing of All England,Aethelstan was a great warrior, nonetheless, whosefame stemmed from hisconquests in Cornwall and Wales, and his defeat of acombined force ofScots, Welsh and Vikings at the battle of Brunanburh in938. AEthelstanwas a patron of monastic communities and especiallysupported themonastery at Malmesbury, where his tomb can be found, today.
Reigned 924-940. This renowned prince, who by the splendid victory of
Brunanburgh crushed his enemies, and achieved the sovereignty of thewhole
island, had the glory of establishing what has ever since been calledthe
kingdom of England.
Stammtafeln says he was also Archbishop of Canterbury.
