Per Carsten Pick: "Only a small annotation to the older (German)generations in this family t
ree which is only interesting, if you want totake the information about the places very correctly: The name of theparish, where the Borgstadt family obviously comes from, is Werther. Itis about 10 kilometres north-west the town of Bielefeld. Indeed itbelongs to the province of Westphalia. But in a way it is not correct tocall it "Germany" because Germany was no political unit before 1871. Itconsisted of a lot of sovereign states the biggest of which was Prussia, and Westphalia was a porvince of Prussia. In 1871, after a common"German" war against France, about 20 German princes united and declaredthe Prussian king (Wilhelm I.) to be the German "Kaiser" (emperor). Before, Germany is no state, but only a cultural and geographical factor.(So your forefather Johann Heinrich Borgstadt cannot have served Germanmilitary before 1856, because there was none, surely he served Prussianmilitary.)"
