Text: Excerpt from THE NETHERLANDS AND THE UNITED STATES: A STORY OFOLD FRIENDS. Foreword by Hans van Mierlo, (former) NetherlandsMinister for Foreign Affairs, 1994-1998 - set forth at:(http://www.netherlands-embassy.org/c_story.html#2
While New Amsterdam was never anywhere near the size of itsnamesake in Europe, it had one characteristic in common with theolder town: it too was a bustling, cosmopolitan port frequentedby many nationalities. Because of its commercial focus, foreigners were constantly coming and going. More than any otherNorth American colony, New Amsterdam was a melting pot almostfrom the start, as exemplified by one of the entries in thetown's marriage register, recording the marriage of a Europeanto an African woman, presumably a freed slave.
Social life combined the characteristics of a frontier town anda trade center. The tolerance for which the Dutch were renowned, stemming in part from the idea that it was foolish to giveoffence to anyone who might turn out to be useful, resulted in aproliferation of taverns and brothels. On his arrival in 1647,the Reverend Backerus was horrified to find seventeen or moretaverns where his flock could slake their thirst. Whereas it wasyears before a church was built - the loft of the old mill stillserved that purpose - an official municipal inn was one of thefirst stone buildings to arise, standing on the spot where PearlStreet now intersects Coenties Alley (named after the shoemakerCoenraedt Ten Eyck, whose workshop stood there). Excavations onthe site in 1979 unearthed large quantities of Dutch pottery.
