-The Stryker Bride's Handkerchief-
The first bride to carry this handkerchief was Jane Brown Stryker who was born in Hamilton, New York, February 7, 1845. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Cook Brown, both of whom were born in England. She was the third of five children. One brother, Henry, died in Andersonville Prison during the Civil War. Another brother, James, was a prospector in South Dakota's Black Hills for 60 years. When Jane was twelve years old, she moved with her family to Galena, in the northwest corner of Illinois. Her father was a dentist and physician there for many years. Jane was a tall girl with blue eyes and brown hair. During her girlhood, she was considered one of the beauties of Galena. She carried this lace handkerchief during her wedding to James Franklin Stryker on September 25, 1867 at Grace Church in Galena, Illinois.
