He was born on 17 July 1841, son of MICHAEL MILES and AMELIA nee BUDD. MICHAEL MILES had married AMELIA BUDD at Seale, Surrey, on 27 February 1827 (IGI).

According to the IGI THOMAS MILES married MARY ANN LOWE at Seale, Surrey, on 5 November 1864.
He was described as a 23 year old labourer.

His wife died on 12 June 1867. Her death certificate records his address as Union Road, Aldershot, and his occupation as ironmonger's porter.

He married Charlotte Coombs at Aldershot Parish Church on 25 June 1868. He was described as a light porter.

He was described as an ironmonger's assistant of 10 Alfred Street, Aldershot, on the birth certificates of his daughter NAOMI in 1873, his daughter ELIZABETH MAUD in 1875, and his son FRANK EDWIN in 1879.

According to the 1881 census of 10 Alfred Street, Aldershot, Hampshire, THOMAS MILES was 38 years old, an Ironmonger's traveller, and had been born in Seale, Surrey. His wife CHARLOTTE was 36 years old and had been born in Headley, Hampshire (RG11/0782/22/37).

He was described as a furniture dealer of Edward Street, Aldershot, in 1897 when his daughter NAOMI married WALTER LEEDER EDGOOSE.

According to his son FRANK EDWIN's marriage certificate in 1905 he was a house furnisher.

He died on 17 February 1907 (Source: probate of will).

MILES, Thomas, ironmonger, general store, hardware dealer, china and glass warehouse, furniture dealer; wholesale agent for crystal sunlight oil, 22 Edward Street and 22 Lime Street.

Kelly's Directory of Hampshire 1895, 1899 and 1903 - Aldershot:
MILES, Thomas, ironmonger, general stores, hardware dealer, china and glass warehouse, furniture dealer, Queen's Road & 22 Lime Street.

At the time of the 1901 census he was living at 20 (sic) Lime Street, Aldershot. He was 60 years old and had been born at Tongham, Surrey. Living with him was his wife CHARLOTTE, and their children EDITH, 23, FRANK E., 21, and MAUD E., 25. THOMAS MILES was described as a house furnisher and FRANK and MAUD as assistants (house furnisher) (RG13/610/160/46).

He died at York Road, Aldershot, on 17 February 1907. His son F. E. Miles of York Road, Aldershot, was present when he died.

Will of THOMAS MILES:
"This is the last Will and Testament of me THOMAS MILES of Queens Road Aldershot in the County of Southampton Furniture Dealer I appoint ARTHUR JOHN ANDREWS of Aldershot aforesaid Bank Manager and ARTHUR HERBERT SMITH of the same place Manager of the Junior Army and Navy Stores Limited (hereinafter called my Trustees) to be Excecutors and Trustees of this my will I give and bequeath to my Wife an immediate legacy of Fifty pounds I give to my son FRANK EDWIN MILES All that my shop and premises situate in Queen's Road Aldershot together with the furniture stock-in-trade horses vans carts carriages and the goodwill of my said business of Furniture Dealer and the debts owing to me at the time of my decease in connection with the said business he paying and discharging all debts which may be due from me in connection with my said business and subject to and charged with the payment of an Annuity of the sum of One pound per week to my Wife during her life for her own absolute use and benefit All the residue of my estate I give to my Trustees Upon trust to pay the income arising therefrom to my Wife during her life and from and after her decease Upon trust as to my Corner shop situate in Edward Street and Lime Street Aldershot and the Cottage adjoining thereto known as Number 12 Edward Street and the furniture therein and also my Timber Yard in Church Street Aldershot at the back of Number 10 York Road, Aldershot to pay the income and rents arising therefrom to my daughter NAOMI EDGOOSE for and during her life and from and after her decease Upon trust for the children of my said Daughter NAOMI EDGOOSE who being sons shall attain the age of Twenty one years or being daughters shall attain that age or shall marry under that age in equal shares And upon further trust as to my premises known as Number 14 Edward Street Aldershot and my house known as "Dunraven" York Road Aldershot and the furniture and contents thereof Upon trust to pay the income and rents arising therefrom to my daughter ELIZABETH MAUD MILES for and during her life and from and after her decease Upon trust for all the children of my said Daughter who being sons shall attain the age of Twenty one years or being daughters shall attain that age or shall marry under that age in equal shares And upon trust as to my two cottages known as Numbers 21 and 22 Lime Street Aldershot and my messuage known as Number 10 York Road Aldershot with the contents thereof to pay the income and rents thereof to my Daughter EDITH ALICE MILES for and during her life and from and after her decease Upon trust for all the children of my Daughter the said EDITH ALICE MILES who being sons shall attain the age of Twenty one years or being daughters shall attain that age or marry under that age in equal shares And I direct and declare that my said Daughters NAOMI EDGOOSE, ELIZABETH MAUD MILES and EDITH ALICE MILES shall during their respective life estates in the properties hereinbefore specifically bequeathed to them have the use and enjoyment of the furniture and contents of the several properties without being answerable for any loss or damage thereto during their respective life interests And as to all the residue and remainder of my estate whatsoever and wheresoever I give to my Trustees Upon trust to sell and convert the same into money and to pay out of the proceeds of such sale and conversion all my just debts (other than debts in connection with my said business) and funeral and testamentary expenses and to stand possessed of the residue thereof Upon trust to pay the income thereof to my said Wife during her life and after her decease Upon trust to divide the same between my children who shall be living at my decease in equal shares In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 22 day of December One thousand nine hundred and two - THOMAS MILES - Signed by THOMAS MILES the Testator as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us both present at the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
