Individual:
St. Thomas Weekley Despatch - 25 Jan 1855 - Died at Vienna, C.W., on Sunday the 21st, of cong
estion of the brain. John Elliott, Esq., J. P. Deeply regretted by a large circle of friends and acquaintances to whom he endeared himself by his integrity and warmth of heart.
The John Elliott home was 1/4 mile down the road from the brick home built by John Edison, fa ther of Samuel Edison. Young Samuel Edison Jr. married John's sister, Nancy Elliott and lived in the brick home. In later years, Henry Ford moved the home from Vienna, Ontario to Greenfield Village.
John moved with his parents to German Town, New York at circa age six, then Canada when he wa s 14. At the age of 16, he married Elizabeth Ann, d.o. Jeremiah and Elizabeth Anderson of Bayham. Mr. Elliott filled various offices in the church, eventually being ordained. He was a member of the town and county councils, a magistrate, a commissioner of the queens, and an associate Judge. He died March 14, 1855 and was buried near his residence in Vienna; survived by his wife. (March 14, 1855 Ont - found in the More Methodist Notices) Source: Margaret Nagy, B.C., Canada
John Elliott was an Episcopal Methodist Minister and well-respected merchant. He refused t o support a union b/w the Episcopal and Wesleyan Mehtodists; consequently, he held church meetings in his home until the floor collapsed. He continued to hold meetings on the 2nd floor of his warehouse.

John Elliott dressed elegantly, including a bright red sash, and was considered a wealthy ma n because he owned a lumberyard and planing mill. He was very strict with his family of 10 children. His sons would float his own logs down the river, fish them out, and sell them to him to get a little spending money. John Elliott's sister Nancy, was the mother of Thomas Alva Edison.
John was buried in Vienna, bus his remains along with a daughter, Rachel, were moved to the I ngersoll Cemetery where his widow, Elizabeth lived after his death.
