Notes
Individual:
Cynthia McCausland's 2nd cousin (now deceased) E. Clifford Ladd also descended from Andrew Rankin The following is something he wrote to me

The Mac Rankin name was of Scottish origion the breakdown of which meant
Son of Ran (dolph) kin
Ranken, Rankin, Rankine, and Rankyne - all were spellings appearing in the 15th, 16th and 17th Century records.
The History of the Clans suggests that Rankin is a contraction of Randolph combined with the diminutive "kin". Randolph was a powerful Scottish family - maybe Andy's Mother was a Randolph.

"The Rankin Family (the family of my Mother)
Andrew was of the Clan MacLean - probably through his father's marriage to a clanswoman. He lived in the Inner Hebrides, the Isle of Coll, off western Scotland. A condensation of "Clans of Scotland" says the original MacGillion (or MacLean) was a Tuscan follower of William the Conqueror who took England in 1066.
The clan moved northward and attached itself to the Lords of the Isles. They were at the Battle of Bannockburn.

On September 3rd, 1650 and an attempt was being made to regain the throne of England for Charles II (he was also Charles 1 of Scotland). It had been taken from him in the English Civil Wars - and by Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of England, and his Parliamentarian Army. History calls it the Battle of Dunbar/Worcester. The royal forces were composed in large part by Scots Highlanders - 10,000 Scots were there that day. The Chief of the Clan Maclean was there - and among his clansmen was Andrew Mac Rankin.
Cromwell won the day and 4000 Scots were marched to Durham and imprisoned in Durham Cathedral. That was the day - famed in history - that the king escaped by hiding in an old oak at barrel Boscobel - later fleeing to the Isle of Skye in the care of a lady named Flora MacDonald.

Andrew was among forty Highlanders who were shipped first to Holland in exile and then returned to England
and then two months after the battle, he was shipped out aboard the ship "Unity" - commanded by Captain Augustine Walker. shipped to the Puritan Colonies - indentured to the Pilgrims. The 40 Scots were at first housed in a rough barrack that became known as "The Scots Barracks". Andrew was soon freed, given a grant of land and married Mistress Martha Merry on the 4th of December 1667. They were married by the Rev. Edward Johnson.
Andy and his Merry settled in Old York where her son James was born. Sad to relate - Andy was killed by Indians while defending some of his farmland.with 6 others in York, Maine
A Highlander - a warrior against Cromwell - a voyager across the north Atlantic in the tiny ship of that day - imprisoned - exiled - and finally to die in Indian fighting. Surely we can say that he lived a full life.
James Rankin, son of Andrew and Martha married Priscilla Shaw, daughter of Thomas Shaw of Norton. Banns were published 1-11-1729 (Book A York VR). James and Priscilla had 7 children - the seventh being Constant."

In a book that Cliff Ladd wrote "The Thistle on The Clock", a Novel, written in 1995, is the following Preface.

"This is a work of fiction. In writing a genealogy that included the Rankin clan, enough of the outline of Andy Rankin's life turned up in my research to stir my imagination.
If he ever wrote about his adventures, the account has long sine been lost. Because he was in his twenties before he ever learned to speak English, I doubt that he wrote anything at all. It was a turbulent age so perhaps what befell our hero seemed pedestrian to him. But certainly not to me.
And so this story uses the framework of Andy's true life. He did come from Coll. He did indeed fight at Dunbar-Worcester, was captured, imprisoned in Durham Cathedral and shipped to the New World under indenture. There he met Martha. Many, but not all, of the details of this story are of my imagining.
The chronology is fairly accurate. I do confess to playing a little might loose there however."
