Sir Gilbert Jocelyn, a wealthy Norman knight, came into England, it is said, with the Conqueror, and married the daughter of a Saxon Thane. He settled in Lincolnshire, where he held of Gilbert of Gaunt the lordships of Semperingham and Tyrringtorr. According to Lodge, Peerage of Ireland, vol. e, p. 259 (revised edition of 1789) Sir Gilbert Jocelyne was son of Egidius Josselin, a nobleman of Brittany, who crossed into England in the reign of Edward the Confessor, about 1045. The son of Sir Gilbert, born apparently in England, went into Normancy and returned to England with the Conqueror. Evidence to prove these statements sems to be lacking. - Editor
No attempt has been made in this article to give the genealogy of the family prior to the Norman Conquest or to separate truth from falsehood in what is alleged to be the earlier history of the Josselyns on the Continent.
