Individual:
Montey Bates resided at or near Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. He, in company with his brother-in-law, John Crow, started for what is known as the McElroy Country, being on McElroy Creek in
then Ohio Co. (later Tyler, later Doddridge Co.), (W.) Va., to locate land for themselves and their families.
They arrived at the mouth of Montay's Run, a branch of Fishing Creek, that puts into the latter stream just below Reader, Wetzel Co., (W.) Va., where they proceeded to make camp. While in this camp, they were attacked by the Indians, and Montey Bates was killed and scalped on the spot and was buried there. John Crow escaped from the camp but was pursued and overtaken at the mouth of Crow's Run,
another branch of Fishing Creek just above the town of Reader, (W.) Va., and was also kild and scalped and was buried there. This happened in the spring of 1788 or 1789.
