Individual:
A letter written by Michael Haaf on 27 July 1926
Dear Brother-in-law and sister, I want to tell you that I celebrated my 80th birthday on Fri day, July 23. I went to church early, then I visited Mother's and Father's grave, and then I had a glass of wine. It was the first day that I didn't do any work. I received some presents from relatives, wine and some good cigars. Dear brother-in-law and sister, I hope that you too will live to an old age. We are busy harvesting and it is too bad that we have a lot of rain and all the crops are on the ground. We had cloudbursts in the area and the whole harvest was destroyed. Nothing else is new. Work is slow, factories work only three days and 80 persons are unemployed. I wish all of the family much luck and blessings, with best wishes from your brother, Michael Haaf
A copy of the original letter and this translation was given to Ona Marie Harding Rohde. Sh e also gave me a copy of the poem and it's translation that is below. It was on the front side of the paper originally and Michael wrote the above letter on the back.
To a Dear Friend on His 80th Birthday
Why are the bells tolling so bright and clear from the high tower into the distance?
It's a day of joy like there seldom was one, our friend's 80th birthday is today.
God gave you in all the long years, when there were good times and bad times,
A carefree heart, a happy disposition, like a weightless cloud in the sky.
Though He took a lot from you that you had acquired with hard work and sweat,
With pick and shovel, honestly won, rest at last, your aim and price.
Though God gave you loss and hardship during your lifetime,
Let us not hesitate to acknowledge that it was only His love and not His wrath.
