Individual:
Bridgett Haaf was 21 or 22 yrs old when she came to this country. She had two brothers and t
hree sisters. We have one sister's name. Her brother, Michael, sent her letters from Germany. I have a copy of one letter that he wrote to her on his 80th birthday. There is no envelope or return address on it. I have a note that someone told me that Michael asked her in a letter for lard and tobacco in the war. (I don't know which war.) She sent him $20 which was enough for him to live on for a year. She said that a person could earn 25 cents a week in Bavaria at the time that a week's work in the United States paid $2.50.
On her death certificate it states that her birthplace was Ventzberg, Germany. The informan t was Romaine Rohde, her second child. I heard that the boat left from Ireland. Two families on the boat were the Langon family and the Dennis family. The Dennis family had a mother, a father and 2 girls. The boat landed in New York and she worked there for awhile. She came to Fort Randall in Nebraska. Kloke's sponsored her on the boat and took care of her on the trip over to the United States. At Fort Randall there was a lumber mill.
A note on their home in Europe - It was in a grape-growing area around Bergen, Poland near th e Germany/Poland line.
Another note I had said that her birthplace, Ventzberg, Germy was Wirtzburg, Germany near Hei delburg. She worked in Frankfort in a restaurant. She cooked lobster. She hated putting them in the kettle while they were alive. She said if the people had to cook them they wouldn't think they were so good.
Marriage:
John Theodore and Bridget Haaf met one time and John was interested in her and he wrote a not
e asking Bridget to marry him and gave it to a friend of Bridget's to deliver. The woman he gave it to was interested in John herself so she never delivered the letter. When they met for the second time John asked her why she never replied to his proposal. She said that she had never received it but she would accept. The third time they met was on their wedding day. They were wed in O'Neill at St. Patrick's. In the 1977 commemorative parish book the original information on their wedding was listed. They are listed as John of Prussia and Bridget of Bavaria.
